The other pervert laughs and tells Heath, “A thousand.”

Bile burns my throat. A sick feeling sprouts and circulates in my body.

“Those fuckers,” I grit.

I march from the passage back to the yard. But Sam looks like she’s having fun, and she may find the courage tonight to confess to Rajid.

Deciding not to kill the vibe, I wheel around and hasten to the front door, exiting the house.

I don’t even know why I came to this stupid party.

Oh, that’s right. I wanted to piss off Brandon.

Ugh.

“Where do you really live?” Brandon’s voice catches me by surprise, bringing my steps to an immediate halt.

I glance across the shadowy street, spotting his frame in the light from the post. He’s leaning against his car.

Big surprise, my heart rate spikes, and butterflies launch a fiesta in my stomach.

Swallowing, I calm my nerves to speak. “Thought you left.”

“Well, I didn’t,” he retorts as if I’m silly.

I walk over to him, keeping a gap between us. “Why didn’t you?”

Brandon expels a long and unnerving growl. “So many questions. Just get in the car.”

“No, thanks,” I grunt. “The bus stop isn’t far. I’m good.”

“I wasn’t asking, Kayla.” The severity causes me to cringe.

Crossing my arms, I declare, “You can’t make me do anything.”

He sucks air through his teeth. “Such a stubborn little artist.”

“I’m neither little nor stubborn.”

Not sure why, but the back and forth is doing strange things to my insides.

As he straightens, I regard his broad shoulders. He’s so tall and athletic-looking, though he doesn’t play sports at the academy.

Well, it would be odd if he played, considering he doesn’t like to be touched. So he must work out.

Brandon huffs and opens the passenger door of his Mercedes, which probably costs more than my parents’ incomes combined. “Get in, or I won’t protect you at school.”

I cock my hip and roll my eyes. “I said no, and I don’t need your so-called protection.”

Air rushes from my lungs when he edges closer.

“Heath Turner only wants what’s between your legs. Don’t go to any more of his parties, and do not talk to him again.”

“Wow.” I sniff. “That sounds like jealousy.”

He twists his mouth and grinds out, “You’re infuriating.”

“Hm. Then why bother with me?”
