“Hey, girl!” Natalie squeals in excitement when I enter the eatery. We embrace like long lost friends.

“Ugh, I miss you, Nat,” I exclaim.

“Miss you, too.” She pouts when we ease apart. “Let’s get food and chat.”

Natalie motions to the counter. After purchasing drinks, burgers, and fries, we settle at a table by the window.

“So, how is it on the other side?” she asks before taking a bite. “Those rich kids nice to you?”

“There are some shady ones. But overall, it’s a great school.”

“Made any friends?” Her brows dance in curiosity as she adds, “How are the boys?”

“Hot. I only saw three that are black. But, overall, every one of them seems blessed with good looks.” Especially Brandon. Ugh. Those menacing blue eyes haunt my dreams. I shake it off. “Um, as for new friends, Sam and Rajid are awesome.” Brandon’s interesting, too. “Sam’s a girl, by the way.” I drink some juice and ask, “How about you? How was your first week at WH High without me?”

“It was all right.” Her tone remains cheerful. “Hanging out with Janelle and Misha. We’re in the same classes, so that’s cool.”

Not sure why jealousy pinches me when it’s great she’s not alone. “Oh, I know them; never hung out, though.”

“Yeah.” Glee flickers in her russet eyes, emphasized by the bronze shadow on her lids. “They’re cool girls. We have so much in common. Speaking of, we’re going to a party later.”

“Nice.” I eat amid waiting for an invite, but it doesn’t come. Then again, it’s not like I told her about that asshole’s party last night.

I swallow what’s in my mouth and sip some more of my drink. “We should bring our new friends next time, that way we can all get to know each other.”

Natalie bobs in agreement. “Yeah, that sounds good.” She leans her head and smiles at me. “You know, Kay, I’m so happy for you, girl. I know how much you love art. It’s awesome that you won that scholarship.”

I sputter a modest giggle. “Thanks, Nat. I truly appreciate it.”

We reach across the table at the same time to playfully jerk each other’s hands.

Settling again, we continue talking while finishing our food. Afterward, it’s leisure strolls around the plaza, windowshopping, until Natalie has to leave for work.

“I’ll call you during the week,” I tell her and lean in for another tight hug. “Let’s meet up next Saturday.”

“Sure.” She gives my arm a loving squeeze. “See you, Kay.”

“See you, girl.”

We veer in the opposite direction. Hopefully, Natalie and I will be able to hold on to our friendship.

The bakery isn’t too far from the plaza. Instead of taking the bus, I wander along the strip and enjoy the warm, sunny day.

My stomach sinks when I arrive and spot Madison Sutton through the window.

Rochelle’s at the register, waiting for the snobbish girl to pick something.

There are other customers in line.

Why is Madison in West Heights at my dad’s place? I bet it’s to mess with me.

I linger outside, wanting to avoid her dramatic ass.

Unexpectedly, a strange feeling cascades over me.

The hair at the back of my neck stands up like static. It’s as if someone’s watching me.
