The second I turn, flowy black hair swooshes from the corner of the building next door.

An indescribable urge gnaws at my insides.

I’m about to walk to the curb, but Madison’s voice stops me. “I thought I’d come by and support my classmate, but this is just crap.”

Giggles follow her rude remarks.

I throw my hands up and pivot to face her. “What’s your deal? Girl, why am I living in your head, rent-free?”

Madison sniffs in displeasure and tosses the small paper bag into the trash. “It’s not worth the price.”

Her friend guffaws like she’s missing brain cells.

It upsets me. I know Madison spent money at the bakery, but my dad works hard, making batches every day.

“Did you seriously have to do that in front of the place? Other customers could see. My dad...” My voice hitches. I suppress it and remain tough.

Doreen wouldn’t let these superficial girls see her sweat.

“Heard you left Heath’s party with Brandon last night.”

“So that’s why you came to shit on my dad’s business,” I conclude. “Bored little rich girl. All that wealth and nothing better to do?”

She scrunches up her face. “I’m warning you, Kayla.” My name leaves her mouth in utter disdain. “Stay away from Brandon or else.”

“Wasn’t it you who said Brandon doesn’t get close to anyone?” I strike back in a tone laced with venom.

Annoyed, Madison sniffs and motions to her friend. “Come on, Ashley. Let’s get out of the ghetto before someone robs us.”

“Wow,” I marvel at her blatant stereotype.

They cackle together and hop into Madison’s Jaguar, taking off immediately.

Yikes. Such ugly people.
