“Well, we can’t have that. I’ll stop by during lunch break, pick you up early so you can nap before ballet this afternoon.”

“Um, I was thinking. Maybe I could skip today?” Britney sounds almost childlike, begging.

I glance at Mom.

Her tan features are stiff, but her blue eyes appear to be fuming.

“Excuse me?” she utters on a short, derisive chortle. “Brit, your performance is fast-approaching. If you fail, you won’t move on in the class. No. You absolutely cannot skip.” Mom angles her head and carefully studies my sister. “Where’s this coming from? You’ve never mentioned taking a day off before.”

I flick to Britney, urging her in my mind to stand up for herself.

She shakes her head and forces a smile. “I’m sorry. It was silly of me. As I’ve said, I didn’t get much rest.”

I clench my jaw. Looking at Mom, I’m about to come to my sister’s defense, but Britney speaks.

“Eric’s waiting. Bran, aren’t you meeting someone?” She walks away after that.

Mom squints at me, forehead creased. “Who are you meeting?”

“My girlfriend,” I say coolly.

She flinches in surprise. “I…had no idea you were seeing someone.” She softens her features with that motherly smile she used to give me when I was little. Like that will erase the past, and I’ll forgive her.

It only pisses me off.

Cutting my eyes, I grit, “You don’t have a clue about a lot of things.”

“Ugh.” She twists her mouth, offended. “Brandon—”

“Goodbye, Mom.” I storm out of the room, leaving her hurt from the sting of my remarks.
