THIRTEEN

“Who’s that?” Dad pauses at the driver’s door.

I follow his line of sight, senses going on alert at the Mercedes pulling up near our mailbox.

“Um, that’s Brandon. A friend from the academy.”

“He’s giving you a ride?” Dad queries. “You didn’t mention it.”

“I wasn’t sure,” I murmur awkwardly.

Brandon gets out of the car and starts over.

“Lord. What a world we live in where a teen drives such an expensive car.”

“Hm.” I quickly explain in a hushed tone, “Dad, don’t get offended when he doesn’t shake your hand. Brandon has an issue with touch.”

Dad wrinkles his brows. “Like anxiety?”

I nod. “Something like that.”

He shrugs and comes around the car. “You know, that actually makes me feel better. He’ll keep his hands to himself.”

“Dad,” I groan, acting normal when Brandon reaches us.

He stands tall and with confidence, his smile more charming than ever. “Good morning, Mr. McNeil. I’m Brandon Decker. I hope you don’t mind me driving Kayla to school and back home daily?”

“Daily?” Dad repeats in amazement and looks at me.

“I told him that’s not necessary—”

“No, that’s great,” Dad sputters, a little too happy. “I was worried the distance would wear her down, and her mom and I aren’t able to pick her up, so that’s kind of you, Brandon. I appreciate it.”

“No problem, sir. Kayla’s my girlfriend. I’ll treat her well.”

My eyes expand.

I snap my head to Dad.

He slowly nods, impressed with Brandon’s confidence. And just like that, he’s won over my dad.

“Well, you two go on then. Don’t be late for school.” Dad pecks my forehead. “See you later, Kayla bug.”

I achieve a smile and tell him, “See you, Dad.”

He waves to us as we walk away.

Reaching the car, Brandon opens the passenger door for me. I hop in and glance at my dad, still watching us from his car. He has a look of content.

Brandon honks before driving away.

“Girlfriend?” I sputter, not wasting another second. “Don’t throw that label around. You still haven’t asked, and I haven’t decided.”

He ignores my remarks, saying instead, “Sorry I couldn’t shake your dad’s hand. He must dislike me for that.”

Releasing a long sigh, I turn my head and reply, “It’s fine. I explained to him prior.”

Brandon briefly looks over. “What did you tell him about me?”
