“Brandon…”

“And yet I want you,” he murmurs.

My blood pumps faster at the lust in his voice.

He straightens to full height, allowing the rose to fall onto my chest. “Don’t skip lunch. Come on.”

I clutch the rose and rise from the grass, inhaling the sweet scent as I follow Brandon from the garden.

We step into the corridor at the same time Heath comes strolling by. My smile wavers.

Heath stalls, curiosity masking his features as he passes a look between Brandon and me. “Kayla. We haven’t gotten a chance to talk again after the party. By the way, how come you just left?”

“Don’t speak to her,” Brandon rumbles in annoyance as if how dare Heath address me.

“I used to think you were gay,” Heath hits back, then flicks to me again. “Turns out, like me, you just wanted some spice.”

“You mean some black pussy?” I repeat his words, not keeping the bite from my voice.

He sputters an awkward laugh. “Shit. You heard that.”

“What?” Brandon grunts out of anger. He shifts to his other leg.

“I guess you’re out of a grand, right? Then again, that’s nothing for someone like you.”

“You placed a fucking bet on her?” Brandon snaps. He inches forward with his fists balled.

Heath throws him a scornful look. “We were just messing around, Decker. What are you going to do, anyway? You don’t even touch people unless they brush you.” He looks at me again. “Come find me when you need a good fuck.”

I yelp as Brandon swooshes past me and shoves Heath hard. His eyes bulge in shock, plunging into the wall behind him. A painful gasp leaves his lungs, and he slithers to the floor like mushy spaghetti.

Akin to a wild bull, Brandon charges at a terrified-looking Heath. But just as he raises his fist to do damage, a familiar voice breaks in.

“What’s going on here?”

Brandon pauses and looks at the guidance counselor, chest going up and down fast. Her presence is the restraint needed because the shock has me frozen.

Ms. Hall is gripping her phone as if ready to call someone.

Heath pushes from the ground and fixes his uniform. “It’s nothing,” he coughs out. “Nothing at all. Just goofing around.” He treads in the opposite direction, steps a little shaky. He must have been scared shitless.

Ms. Hall comes closer. “Kayla, is everything all right?”

I’m still mum by what I just saw. Perhaps I intentionally caused it, mentioning the party with Brandon next to me when I could have kept it moving.

I look at Brandon. His blue eyes are filled with rage, glaring after Heath. I peer down at his fists, clamped so tight his knuckles are pale.

“Brandon?” Ms. Hall draws his focus, tone soft and kind. “It’s been so long since you sat with me.”

“Because it’s pointless,” he clips and marches off.

My eyes widen. “Bran—”

“It’s all right.” She angles her head and smiles at me. “How are you doing, Kayla? Settling well?”

I nod. “Yes.”

She regards the single rose in my hand, then peers down the corridor and frowns. “Brandon Decker has a lot of pain. Careful.” She continues on her way.
