“Are you blaming my sister for using her like she’s nothing?” Brandon snarls, making even me retreat into myself.
“No, I’m not,” the guy insists. “It’s just—ugh!” He hurls over in pain at a swift punch in the stomach from Eric.
I gasp, eyes going wide.
“Sorry. My hand moved on its own,” Eric jokes.
Brandon remains impassive, saying with sheer sarcasm, “What was that? Speak up, Christian.”
Eric releases an arrogant chuckle and orders, “Finish what you were going to say.”
“Come on, guys.” Christian stifles his coughing then tries to straighten. “Brit’s not even talking to me.”
Eric socks him in the face.
“Uhh…” Christian crumbles to the ground, groaning and rubbing his jaw.
I detest bullying more than anything.
So did my sister.
Doreen would never stand by and let anyone get away with it. This Christian guy isn’t at their height. Plus, he’s skinnier than Brandon and Eric.
Clenching my fists, I dash over without a second thought and shout, “Leave him alone!”
All three snap to me from surprise.
I charge toward Eric and shove him at the chest just as he’s about to punch Christian again.
His green-flecked eyes expand. “Who the hell do you think you are?” He moves forward, and I stagger back into a solid wall.
My mouth drops open in shock.
Oh shit!
I swivel and peer up into angry blues.
Brandon huffs and scurries away from me as if I’m the plague.
He didn’t shove me back.
Thank goodness because I’m not trying to end up in the hospital.
Christian takes off running, leaving me behind with his bullies.
Wow. Unbelievable.
I gulp and try to devise an escape.
Brandon’s staring at me like he’s about to murder me, and Eric is possibly waiting for the go-ahead.
Live to fight another day, Doreen’s voice urges.
I dash past Brandon.
“Ah!” I cry out as a hand grabs my arm and yanks me back. Losing my balance, I tumble to the ground, hurting my butt. “Ouch! You jerk!” I glare at Eric, standing above me with his hands at his waist.
“You should have minded your business,” he chides. “Now, you’re in for it.”
