Chapter 20

"I don't know how to tie this stupid thing," I say with frustration, tugging on the tie for the fifth time.

"Let me help." Jolie comes to stand before me.

"And just how do you know how to put a tie on?" I arch a brow.

She holds her phone up. "YouTube, of course."

She's done a minute later, stepping behind me so I can look myself over in the mirror. I take a deep breath and let it out, trying to push the nerves over this job interview away.

"You're gonna do great," Jolie tells me.

"I hope so. This place seems really nice. But I feel like that probably means they already have some of the best people working there then."

"Then hiring you will only add to their excellent rooster. Now come on, before you're late."

I nod and follow her out of my room. I'm not at all surprised when I find my grandma waiting in the living room with a camera.

"Really, Grandma?"

"What? This is a big moment. Your first job interview."

She's right. I didn't have to interview for Regina. I just...got the job. That thought does nothing for my nerves. That this is my first interview, and that I have nothing but a clothing store to put on my resume.

"Come on and smile for me."

I do, and she and Jolie take a few pictures before I leave. My grandma waves from the door as I open the door for Jolie.

"Another month and you’ll have a too heavy backpack, and bags under your eyes from studying for exams. Can't you just feel the excitement?" Jolie jokes as I begin driving.

"Oh yeah. I am just dying to jump back into the pop quizzes and professor's droning on in the driest voices ever."

She laughs. "I can't wait to see you around campus. I can come up to you like a stranger and try to convince you to give me a quickie in the car."

I damn near swerve off the road, looking over at her with wide eyes. "Well, if you had told me that before, I would've switched those credits over sooner."

She grins. "Well now you know. So don't shoot me down."

"Not a chance in hell."

We pull up in front of campus, and she kisses me before getting out. She ducks her head back in.

"Don't be nervous. You're gonna do awesome."

I nod as she stands up and closes the door. The drive to the counseling center is only a few minutes away. I spend it trying to form answers to likely questions in my mind. When I arrive, I take another deep breath before getting out of the car. As soon as I walk in, a guy who doesn't look too much older than me smiles my way.

"Elijah?" he asks.

"Yes. Mr. Rogers?"

"Please, call me Edward. Come right this way. I'll give you a tour before we get started. I find that's always the way to go, to see if you even think the place fits you before we do the interview. Follow me."

He shows me the different rooms, some for art therapy, music therapy, group therapy rooms, and the smaller offices each counselor gets for one on one sessions.

"This would be your office, should you get the job," he says, gesturing into an empty room.

Only a desk and a few chairs sit inside. And maybe until right this moment, seeing the office that could be mine, did I realize how badly I truly want this job.
