Sprung Monkey

Bam! Bam! Bam!

"Oh, Josh, give it to me! Give it to me!"

Oh, good grief. I didn't even know he had anyone over tonight. Great. I leaned forward so I wouldn't feel the headboard hitting our shared wall.

I'd already hinted to him once before that he needed to bolt the stupid thing into the wall. Or get rid of it altogether. One of these days, I swore I was going to sneak into his apartment and do the deed for him.

Bam! Bam! Bam!

"Oh, my God! I'm gonna come! I'm gonna come!"

Sighing, I put down my dog-eared copy of Pride and Prejudice. So much for my annual date with Mr. Darcy.

"Harder! Faster! Harder!"

BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM!

Wow, my uberly hot next-door neighbor Josh must have been getting a super workout. And he'd sure found a vocal one tonight. I thought about closing my window, but I was too lazy to get up, and I figured it'd be over soon. She was close, right?

"Oh, God! I'm coming! I'm coming! I'm com—"

Oh, thank God. She made an inhuman noise that ricocheted through the courtyard, making me laugh out loud. Quickly, I clapped my hand over my mouth. Our walls were incredibly thin, and I didn't want them to hear me.

Glancing around my bedroom, I wondered once again if I could move my bed to a different wall. But between the weirdly placed bedroom door on one side, the huge window on the other, and the sliding doors on the closet, there were no other options.

Well, at least it was over. You'd think a stud like Josh would go at it again and again. But in the short time I'd lived here, I'd already figured out he was a one-and-done kind of guy. Whoever this girl was, she'd be outta there very, very soon.

Just as I began to pick up my book, my phone vibrated.

Devon. Wow, why was he calling so late? It was only eleven here but two in the morning in New York.

"Hey, babe," he said, his voice a little wobbly.

Oh, boy. I knew that tone. He was drunk and trying not to slur his words.

"Hi?" I said. He was really fun to mess with when he was wasted.

"Hi?" he repeated, clearly confused.

"I just wanted to call you and see how you were doing," I teased, wondering how much he'd had to drink.

"Uh, great. That's nice of—" There was a strange silence as I held in my laughter. "Waaaaait. I called you."

"Hey, you caught that. Maybe you're not as drunk as I thought." I laughed.

He joined in with a chuckle. But I caught something in there... something a little edgy.

"So," I ventured. "Did you go out with Victor and Peyton or something after you met with the wedding planner?"

"Uhhh..."

"Or did you guys just hang out and drink beers?"

"Uhhh... well, actually..."

Definitely something strange going on. "Well, actually what?" I asked, a little bubble of nerves forming in my belly.
