"Well, so Violet took me out for drinks because we needed to discuss the, um, drunk, I mean, drink options at the wedding."

"Oh." That seemed a little odd. Right? Or was I being paranoid?

"Yeah. We got a ridiculous amount of stuff covered. S-so much settled."

"Oh," I repeated, still a bit surprised that he'd gone out drinking with the wedding planner. "Well, that's great I guess."

"It really was, babe," he reassured me. "Once we settle on the venue and date, it'll be so easy to put the rest of it all together."

Okay. That sounded good. Devon was serious about doing everything himself. I really wasn't into the whole wedding planning thing, and Devon was the opposite. We were perfect for each other. So perfect.

"Okay, well, that's great," I agreed. "Hey, and thanks for all the photos you sent."

"Oh, yeah?" he asked, his voice back to normal.

Maybe he'd just been nervous to tell me about going out for drinks with Violet. It was weird, but the fact that he told me, well, I knew I could trust him.

"Honestly, they're all so beautiful," I said. "I would have no clue which one to choose."

"Well, that's what I'm here for." I could practically see the proud look I knew was on his face. "I'm going to make this the wedding of your dreams."

I cringed a bit because I had no wedding dreams. But it was super sweet nonetheless. "Aw, I love you so much, boo."

Three quiet knocks sounded on the wall behind me, and I rolled my eyes, ignoring it.

"I love you more," Devon said. "I miss you so much."

"Me too."

I couldn't believe how much I missed him. Everything was so crazy different lately. He'd been that steady force in my life, and it hadn't been the same since he'd left.

Three louder knocks right next to where my head was.

"What was that?" Devon asked.

Sighing, I knocked back quickly before answering. "Oh, it's just my neighbor."

"That Josh guy?"

"Yeah."

There was a strange beat of silence, and I remembered Josh and Devon meeting when I'd moved in recently. Devon had instantly taken a disliking to him, and I had no clue why. Josh was perfectly friendly.

Maybe it was some kind of testosterone, alpha-dude thing. Maybe it was because Josh had been shirtless while offering to help carry up boxes.

I mean, the guy was pretty buff, and I'd certainly snuck a little peek. I was engaged, but I could still look, right? Just a teeny, tiny peek here and there?

"Is he knocking at your door?" Devon said, that edge back in his voice.

"No, no," I answered. "Just the wall."

"The wall? Why?"

Sighing, I realized I'd have to tell Devon the whole story. "So I had my nightmare soon after I moved in here. And I must have screamed or something."

"Oh, God."

"Yeah, exactly. So Josh, whose head is like inches away on the other side of the wall, well, I guess he got worried. And he knocked on the wall and shouted, asking if I was okay."
