Chapter Twenty

Familiar Faces

Thenextmorning, reeling from my nightmare, I dressed in a fog. I asked BeLew to repeat themselves several times, unfocused on our conversation. Dean was no better, consumed with the day ahead. The boys knew something was wrong, but they were making volcanos at school that day, and that consumed their minds. Motherhood still perplexed me, but one thing I knew for certain was that young boys loved blowing shit up.

“Are you sure baking soda and vinegar make a volcano?” Beau asked.

“It is sodium hydrogen carbonate and if the teacher said it will, it will,” Lewis asserted.

Their eyes gazed up at me for confirmation, and I stood slack-jawed, my mind one thousand miles away. “Um, yes, it will work.”

“Why?” they asked in unison.

“How long will it take? Do we have to wait all day?” Beau continued.

“Something about molecules and hydrogen. It doesn’t take long. Here, take my watch today and you can time it. Don’t lose it. Anyway, in about ten minutes when we get to school, you can ask all the questions you want. That’s where you learn things.”

“Right, because we’re not learning much of anything here,” Beau giggled. Lewis agreed with a nod. I groaned, and we shuffled out the door.

Dean held my elbow back as we turned a corner in the hallway toward the Classis rooms. “I’ll meet you at work. I need to get there early and add you to the security board,” he said.

“Right, okay t-thanks,” I stuttered. I had almost forgotten that today he would take me to the chemistry building. Before I continued back down the hallway, he pulled me into a kiss. It was short but firm. When his lips left mine, his eyes looked past me and he smirked at the space behind us. When I heard BeLew squeal Sam’s name, my eyes rolled. Still an asshole.

“You should come with me now,” Dean ordered.

“Dean, please,” I begged. “I don’t want to miss the kid’s volcano. I promised. There are parents everywhere. Don’t worry about Sam.”

He cocked his head, every vein in his neck protruding. I hugged the bastard, running my hands up and down his back, trying to get him to agree.

“I’ll see you right after,” he snipped. Dean pulled back, turned, and left.

Thanks for the hour hall pass.

I stomped down the hallway. The boys had their arms wrapped around Sam and his eyes met mine, burning with fire. He gave them a pat on their backs and steered them into the room.

We came at each other so fast we almost collided. His hands gripped my arms and held me against him. “You’re pushing your luck already,” I said into his chest. “Were you waiting for me?”

“You’re just a pleasant surprise,” he teased. “They asked me to co-host the explosion at school today. Volcanos and fire and all, they want someone from engineering to oversee the chaos.”

“You volunteered.”

“Yes. Yes, I did.”

We stepped to the side, letting kids shuffle into the room.

“You know, that kiss, Dean, just…” I trailed off.

“I’m not worried about Dean,” Sam scoffed. “I’m happy to see you. Even if I had to grit through that scene first. I want to kiss you more than anything right now, but I don’t know how many spies Dean has in this place.”

I moved closer, brushing my nipples against Sam’s chest. “I want to do more than kiss.”

“Down woman. Last Dean heard, you aren’t talking to me. I’m surprised you’re allowed near me.”

“What time is the explosion?”

Sam gave a wide smile. “I’m sorry, what?”

I smacked him on the chest. “The volcano explosion. When is it? You’re here before attendance.”
