He put an arm around her and steadied her back to the house.
I saw her wipe her face with her hands and then stop for me to catch up. I stood by her side and tilted my head to her, ready for her question.
“I don’t want to know,” she said. “Just tell me what we need to do.”
“Okay,” I said as I hugged her, and she walked back to Luke alone.
“So, it happens now?” Sam asked once Luke had Lori in his arms.
“Yes, they’re here.”
Sam clenched his jaw and reached for my hand. I placed it in his as he pulled me into a kiss, our mouths moving in a familiar rhythm. The baby kicked, and we smiled through our lips, both halted by her movement. He took my face in his hands and pulled my gaze upward so we were eye to eye. “We are in this together.”
I placed my hands over his and kissed the inside of his palm. “In this together. Forever.”
