Everestisinthe hospital and Perry is dead, but my body is still prepped for action and tight with worry. Hunter stepped out to probably take a call that is so secret only a few people in the world could hear. Us finding her before the FBI has put a huge stick up the lead agent’s ass and has upped his suspicion in me and my family, a suspicion I don’t have time to field.

Each breath she takes in her sleep is like a whimper, as if she’s still in captivity. We were doing so well and the trauma from being missing for a week and the nonstop news coverage she hadn’t yet seen will set us back for sure. The moment in her bed was promising, but she kind of retreated after. Tucker and Tennesse are on the opposite side of the room, whispering about something, but I’m too focused on my wife to care.

The door flies open, and the noise almost wakes up Everest. I glare up at Agent Donaldson as he practically stomps in the room with no concern for my wife’s rest.

“Mr. Cambridge, can you come with us?”

I remain seated as I look him up and down. His suit is cheap, his hair has too many products, and his body had too much attitude.

“No. I’m not leaving my wife’s side. Ask your fucking question and get away from me.”

He looks over to where she’s sleeping, then turns his light brown eyes back to me like I put her in that bed.

“We have questions for her too when she wakes up.”

“You’re not asking her shit.”

He places his hands on his hips. “Get in the way of our investigation and I’ll personally arrest you for obstruction.”

I run my fingers through my hair because I’m really trying to respect his federal status. Sitting up straighter, I regain eye contact with him.

“If you wake up my wife, you’ll have to arrest me for much, much more than obstruction. Why did you come here?”

He shows me a video on Sparrow’s social media page the day Everest went missing. I’m dancing while preparing the barbeque. Her caption reads, “Your future father-in-law could never…”

“Why are you referred to as her father-in-law when all the documents say that Rowe Cambridge is Whitman Cambridge’s son?”

Whit and Rowe return while he’s asking his question.

“That’s none of your fucking business and has nothing to do with my wife being kidnapped.”

“Speaking of which, you look awfully happy the day she went missing.”

“Because that was before I was informed that she was. Check the timestamps, idiot.”

“I’m supposed to believe that she was missing and found with no help from the FBI, just like you miraculously returned from the dead?”

I rub my temples because my brain tells me to throw him out of the window. We are on the highest floor, so he’d be a good splat.

“I hope your wife gets kidnapped so you can know how stupid you’re being right now.”

“I ought to drag your ass in right now for threatening my wife.”

I chuckle and shake my head. “That wasn’t a threat. It was wishful thinking so you can get a lesson in etiquette and humble yourself a little. Now, if I were to say something like ‘if you don’t leave, I’ll break into your home and slit you and your wife’s throats and laugh while y’all bleed out at my earliest convenience, then that would be a fucking threat.”

“You son of a bitch!” He rushes forward like he wants to fight, and I stand up to meet him almost eye to eye. I have an inch or two on him.

“Go ahead and get embarrassed in front of your subordinates,” I warn him through gritted teeth.

“Just so you know, our lawyer has been on speaker since I’ve found you here,” Whit says.

I love him and his by the book ways, but Agent Donaldson needs to back out slowly before I spend my free time making his life a living hell.

“You did nothing for my wife, and you have the nerve to question me instead of looking into the asshole who started it all and find out how he was still contacting the body in the morgue. There is no way to redeem yourself,” I tell him, not backing down from his stare. “Don’t let your badge give you any misconceptions. I have time, money, and a team of lawyers. If anyone talks to my wife, it’ll be to a female agent who isn’t harboring fantasies on how to pin this on my family. No. One. Else.”

Hunter returns and quickly reads the room. “Francis, do I need to call your director and tell them you botched my sister’s case and is harassing her husband?”
