“Does Whit know you’re still here, or do I need to pay you?”

His jaw clenches as he looks up at our house. “Nah, I’m on vacation.”

I snort. “Some vacation. It looks very relaxing.”

His hair is in one long French braid, his gray t-shirt shows off his arm tats, and his jeans complete his casual look, but his brown-blue eyes are all business. An anger simmers in them I also feel inside. Can’t kill a guy for his crimes when he’s already dead.

“Extremely,” he responds.

“Look, I know what it’s like to feel like everything goes to shit the moment you drop your focus. I feel the same way. It’s understandable that his attack feels personal since you’ve spent the most time in Perry’s presence. He knew when you were watching her and when you weren’t. I also know I can’t talk you out of watching over her until you’re satisfied, she’s safe.” His eyes return to mine since he wants to hear my point. “Just like I know that the best way to make sure she’s safe is to eliminate the threats. It started with Happy, it ends with him.”

He perks up like I offered him all the money in the world. “I like the way eliminate sounds.”

“I was talking to her brother…”

“Hunter, the Seal with the redacted service record. I love the way he looks on paper.”

“Yeah, him… by the way, you have an intel guy, right?”

He nods as he rubs his beard. “Mercy, my um business partner, can hack almost anything.”

“Okay, one thing that has been bothering me is that Perry taunted Everest with photos of me. Very few people have seen and even fewer knew existed. The hospital took them, and Tucker took me away, so no one but him and his people even knew I was there. Not even my family. I need to find out how he got those pictures.”

“Got it. Mercy will tell you everywhere he shitted his entire life by the time he’s done.”

I shake his hand. “Thank you and thank you.”

He smirks. “What’s with the double, thank you?”

“Thank you for looking into it and thank you for caring. I know it’s a job and you don’t have to care, but you do.”

“Thank Jason and Bree. They keep me human where it counts.”
