“Well? What’s the news?” Jack asked.

“My mother is…deceased. They have no information regarding my father. But they located a sister.”

“And?”

“That’s all I know. They won’t tell me anything else.”

“Maybe they don’t know anything more right now. Did he say he was continuing to look?” Jack asked.

I nodded, not thrilled that Jack sounded more like he was on Richard’s side, than mine. “This is bullshit. I hired them to find my family. Why are they acting like they work for her instead?” I asked.

“I know that’s how it seems, but I have a feeling it’s something deeper than that.”

“Like what?” I asked.

“Remember when you found out you were adopted? I do - you were pissed at the world! You even resented your adoptive parents. What if your sister doesn’t know she’s adopted?” he asked. “You remember how traumatic it was to learn such news. She might need time to process it all.”

I replayed the conversation with Richard in my head. “He never said she was adopted.”

“Did he say she wasn’t?” Jack asked.

“He didn’t say much of anything. You know as much as I do now,” I said.

“Then give it a day or two. If you don’t hear from him, call him back. If you need me to intervene, I will. But just remember, this isn’t just about you any longer. This is about your sister, too.”

Jack pulled up in front of my apartment and I reminded him, “Don’t forget. No one can know about this.”

“Once your sister learns about you, that will be out of your control. She might feel the same as you, or she might not.”

“Then it’s even more important that I speak to her.” I didn’t have faith that Richard would explain things the way I wanted.

“It’s a waste of time for me to tell you to have patience, isn’t it?” Jack said.

“I’m forty-four. How much longer do you think I need to wait?”

“Like I said, two days.”

Somehow that seemed like an eternity, but Jack was right.I need to chill out.

But I’d never been one to sit and wait for things to happen. My parents were laid back, but I always pushed and strove until I got what I wanted. Right now, I wanted to meet my sister.

Before I could even exit his car, my cellphone rang. The caller ID showed it was coming from Richard’s office.

“This is Marzoni,” I said, putting the call on speakerphone. No use keeping secrets from Jack now.

“Hello, this is Richard again. I just received a call from your sister. She’d like to meet with you. She asked if you could go to Boston, Massachusetts - this weekend.”

I had plans, but nothing I couldn’t cancel or reschedule. “Just name the time and place, and I’ll be there.”

“My office will contact you tomorrow with the details and I’ll let Mrs. Lane know as well.”

“Mrs. Lane?” I asked.

“Yes. Rhonda Lane. She is married with four children. I will say she sounded surprised by the news of having a brother, but eager to meet with you,” he said. “Mrs. Lane did have one request, though.”

“What’s that?” I asked.

“That you keep this meeting, and her existence, private. At least for the time being.”
