“That’s a good place to start. But if my Lilly was still with us, she’d tell you - there is something between you two that you haven’t figured out yet. Mark my words, if you two continue to spend time together, you’ll see that I’m right.”

It was cute that he thought such a thing, but I didn’t want to live here and evidently Colton wasn’t a fan of the city. I knew it took compromise to make a relationship work, but why start something when we already knew there were such huge hurdles ahead?

Friends is all we can be.

He came back into the kitchen wearing just a pair of jeans and was toweling off his hair. I thought chiseled abs like that only existed in photoshopped images. I quickly averted my eyes before I got caught ogling him.

“Any of those eggs left?” he asked, as he came closer to me.

Please go sit. Preferably with a shirt on.

“We waited for you,” I said. “Just take a seat and I’ll bring everything to the table.” My hands trembled as I picked up the plate of toast and hoped no one noticed.Easy, Annabella. It’s not the first time you’ve seen a half-naked man. Just never one this…perfect.

“Sure you don’t need my help?” he offered.

Need? Yes. Want? No.

“I can manage.” I placed the toast on the table then went to retrieve the omelets and juice.

When the table was set, Mr. Marzoni said, “Sit. You’ve been working since you got up.”

“I’m actually thinking I should probably head back upstairs and pack.”

“You’re leaving? I thought you had a few days off.” Colton said.

“I…do, but I am sure you two have a lot of things to take care of,” I said.

“We do, and it would be a lot easier if you were here,” Mr. Marzoni added. “If not, we might procrastinate, and nothing will ever get done.”

Was he saying that just so Colton and I got the ‘more time together’ that he was talking about? “I’m not sure what help I can be.”

Even Colton looked puzzled on that. His dad said, “We need to pack up some of Lilly’s things and donate them to charity. I’d prefer not to be alone when I do it. I am sure Colton feels the same way, don’t you, son?”

“It would be nice to have a bright distraction,” he said.

Is that what I was? A distraction during this difficult time?I could be a lot worse.

I sat down and grabbed a piece of buttered toast. “Then I guess I can stay a couple more days as long as you don’t mind me using your kitchen.”

Colton took a mouthful of eggs and said, “I might just start eating breakfast if you cook like this all the time.”

Don’t get into any habits. This isn’t forever, it’s till Sunday.

“Colton, why don’t you take her into town after breakfast and show her around?” his dad suggested.

“I thought you wanted my help,” I reminded him.

I didn’t miss his slight grin as he replied, “I think tomorrow will be a better day for it. Besides, Friday night is always the big night in town.”

I wasn’t sure how big anything was here, but I did learn just how smooth Mr. Marzoni was. Going forward I might not be so agreeable so quickly without all the facts first. No matter how you try, your son and I just aren’t a match made in heaven.

That wouldn’t stop me from dreaming about him tonight, because that magnificent view of his chest was absolutely fantasy-worthy.
