I shrugged. “It’s a good thing I like you so much. But, I have to be honest, I think your dad is trying to get us to talk.”

Colton brought the food to the table and I did the same with the toast and the coffee.

“What did you want to talk about?” he asked.

“I don’t know. What do you want to talk about?” I asked.

“I don’t know either, because as far as I can see, talking is not our problem. I can’t remember ever talking to anyone as much as I do with you,” he said.

“I do talk a lot. Sorry,” I said. But with Colton, it just felt easy.

“Don’t apologize. I’m not complaining. And you’re not the only one doing the talking. Usually if I’m out with a woman, I just…half listen. Not the case with you. I want to hear what you’re saying, and for the first time, I’ve told someone things that I haven’t even shared with my family or my best friend Jack.”

So I was right. There is something special going on with us. But can it last?

“True. I’ve learned a lot about you in a short time,” I said. And there’s so much more I want to know.

“I feel the same way. But there’s one thing we haven’t talked about - where we go from here,” he said. He reached across the table, held my hand, and said, “I’d like to date you.”

At our age, it felt so weird talking like this, but then again, part of me felt like a teenager when he looked at me. “I don’t have a curfew or anything,” I joked, trying to lighten the mood.

He chuckled. “And I don’t have to ask your dad’s permission to take you out?”

“No. And I’m sure you’ll pass his inspection and get his approval when you meet him. That is, if you’re still planning on coming back to Boston.” He had mentioned it in passing last night, but we hadn’t put a time to it.

“I would like to see you next weekend if you’re available,” Colton said.

That was going to be challenging. I had taken time off this week, and others had covered for me. No way could I do that two weekends in a row. “I’m not going to be able to. Could you make it the following weekend?”

I’d have to sit down with my dad and explain that I’d need every other weekend off. If he said no, he could cross grandchildren off his list because dating is an important part. The other option was me leaving the business and getting a job working somewhere else.It would break his heart, but I have to think of my own heart, too.

“I can do that,” Colton said.

I didn’t want to suck the joy out of this relationship, but the logistics wouldn’t be easy. We’d need to take turns flying to see each other. Would that grow old, or would it keep the magic alive?

I took a deep breath. “Do you think that will be enough? I mean…do you think we can sustain all that travel?”Because if we keep getting closer, I’m going to want more.

“I honestly don’t know,” he said, considering. “It’s been so long since I had a relationship. I date often, but nothing that requires this type of planning and effort,” he admitted.

“Is it…too much?” I asked.

He squeezed my hand. “My mom always said anything that comes easily probably isn’t worth the effort. I have no idea what the future is, but I’m willing to give this a serious try if you are. If you’re not, I’ll understand. Long distance relationships aren’t for everyone.”

Colton was giving me an out. I could get my heart broken, but I didn’t want this to end. Not before it really had the chance to begin.

I squeezed his hand back, tightly. “I don’t like to live with regret, and if I don’t give this a try, I know I will.”

He got up and pulled me into his arms. “I’m going to try my darndest not to disappoint you,” he said.

Before I kissed him, I said, “I promise to do the same.”

We were still in his dad’s home, so there was only so much we could do. But this meant we could focus on getting to know each other better instead of allowing the physical relationship to become our priority.

But I can’t wait to have you kiss more than my lips. Damn it. Two weeks is going to feel like a lifetime.
