CHAPTER12

Annabella

I’m not sure if it was the sweet dreams of Colton or the two glasses of wine I had, but I slept better than I had in a long time. I threw the covers off and dragged myself from the bed. Was it my imagination or did I smell bacon?

Oh no. I’m supposed to be making breakfast.

I wanted to get dressed first, but there was no time. I couldn’t have his dad making breakfast all by himself. I had on my satin pajama set, which was as modest as any other clothing. I pulled my hair into a ponytail and headed down to the kitchen.

When I entered, it was not Mr. Marzoni standing there, but Colton. “What are you doing here?” I asked.

He turned and said, “I’m staying here. Guess that wine hit you harder than I thought,” he teased.

“Very funny. I mean, why aren’t you out for your morning jog?” I asked.

“Already finished that and showered. Figured you needed your rest, and it was my turn to cook for you,” he said, as he took the bacon from the skillet. “Hope you like poached eggs.”

My mouth watered. They were my favorite, but I never made them at home. “My dad used to make them for me all the time when I was little. What can I do to help?”

“I’d like to say nothing, but how about you butter the toast?” he suggested.

I looked and noticed there wasn’t even any bread out. “Maybe I’ll make some toast first,” I said.

He looked around. “Damn. I thought I did that already.”

“I might have gotten more than enough sleep, but I’m not sure you got enough,” I teased.

As I went to slip by him, he grabbed hold of my arm and stopped me. “If I slept poorly, I blame you.” Then he kissed me lightly before letting me go.

I liked this little flirting we did, and wanted it to continue, so I stepped it up. “I’d take those kisses over breakfast any day,” I said.

I heard the clearing of a throat from behind us, and I blushed immediately. The last thing I expected was for his father to have overheard that. I shot a look at Colton, who was grinning.

Not funny.

Trying to pretend as though I hadn’t just embarrassed myself, I turned with a smile and said, “Good morning, Mr. Marzoni.”

“Good morning, Annabella. I’d ask how your date was last night, but I already have my answer. It’s nice to see the two of you getting along so well.”

“I was just teasing Colton,” I said, fully aware of how flimsy that sounded.

“That’s fine. I’m going into town and won’t be back until much later. You two have a nice day,” he said.

Colton asked, “Dad, aren’t you having breakfast with us?”

“No.”

“I thought we were going to go through Mom’s things today,” Colton pressed.

Mr. Marzoni shrugged. “I changed my mind. I’m sure you and Annabella can find something else to do.”

He didn’t wait for an argument, and Colton and I were left standing there. “Why do I have a feeling that my dad has played us both?”

I chuckled. “Because he did.”

I turned back to the toaster as they popped up and buttered them.

“You don’t sound unhappy about that,” Colton said.
