“She’d like that. She loves wildflower bouquets,” I told him. “There’s a florist shop on the way.”

“Excellent. Is there anything else I should know before meeting your parents?” he asked.

I didn’t want to say it, but I knew it would come up at some point, even though I’d already warned them against asking. “My parents, mostly my mother, might broach the topic of grandchildren. Just ignore any questions like that.”

“Why? You don’t like children?” he asked.

I gripped the steering wheel tightly. “I do. But my mother is…pushy about that and it’s not her business.”Since we haven’t discussed it. And we shouldn’t have to! We’ve only been dating for three weeks.

“My mom would’ve done the same thing. It might be annoying, but it’s natural for parents to put us on the spot about things we normally avoid talking about when we’re alone with them. I actually heard my dad do it a few times when you were staying with us.”

I nodded. “He looks so innocent when he does it that you can’t even be mad,” I said.

“Maybe you can’t, but I was. I couldn’t believe he asked if we were practicing safe sex. I’m forty-four. I don’t need the sex talk, and definitely not in front of you,” he grumbled.

I laughed. “I thought that was hilarious.”

“It wasn’t.”

“Okay, maybe not the question, but your expression was. I mean, you looked like you were twelve and trying to comprehend what he meant by sex. I swear, if he started with the birds and bees lecture, I would have lost it,” I laughed.

“Still not funny. I hope we don’t get that talk on Sunday,” he said.

“No. My dad never talks about sex and my mother, she would, but not in front of my dad. He’s old-fashioned when it comes to that stuff. He’s got an image in his head of how a woman should be treated. Even if he sees a man in a movie abuse a woman, my father flips out. I have no idea what it triggers in him, but he can’t stand it.”

“You don’t have to worry about that. I’ve never laid a hand on a woman. Well, not in an aggressive way,” he said.

“I didn’t think you did.”

Colton had shown me a very tender, kind soul. It’s who he is, just like his dad.

We pulled up in front of my apartment building and I said, “We’re here. Ready to go inside?”

“If it means holding you in my arms, then I was ready hours ago,” he smiled.

It didn’t take long for us to get upstairs and inside. I showed him around the apartment, and he put his bag in the bedroom. “Did you want to unpack or maybe take a shower while I fix us something to eat?”

“A shower sounds good. But I’m not really hungry,” he said.

“There are clean towels in the bathroom, and I’ll pour us some wine,” I said, leaving him in the room alone.

I wasn’t sure if there had been an offer to join him, but I panicked a little bit. There was no denying that I wanted him and planned on making love tonight, but didn’t want him to think that was all I wanted.

In the kitchen, I pulled out a bottle of chilled wine and poured us each a glass. I walked into the living room and went to put them on the coffee table. He’d left the bedroom door open and I could hear the shower running.

Oh, what the hell.

I walked into the bedroom, put the glasses of wine on the nightstand. I stripped off my t-shirt and jeans, leaving just my bra and matching thong on and headed into the bathroom. When I opened the door, the hot steam enveloped me, but I could see him through the glass shower door. His back was towards me and he was washing his shoulders.

“Are you going to stand there ogling or are you going to join me?” he asked.

Caught. Damn it.

I opened the shower door and stepped inside. Normally I felt lost in this huge shower, but with Colton, it now seemed so small.

As I pressed up against him he said, “I think you may have forgotten to remove a few articles of clothing.”

“Because I know how much you love red,” I said. “Thought you’d help me take them off.”
