CHAPTER24

Colton

My eyes must be playing tricks on me.That couldn’t be Annabella approaching the jet. But as she got closer, I knew it was. What is she doing here? I never told her I was flying into Boston. Only one person knew – Brice – but he didn’t even know Annabella.

What the fuck does it matter? She’s here.

I got up out of my seat and brushed past the pilot who was standing by the doorway. “Excuse me. There is someone I need to speak to.”

“If it is Miss Montgomery, you don’t have to worry. She’s boarding the jet and we’ll be flying out with her shortly,” he said.

I looked at him, puzzled. “Annabella is using the Henderson jet?” I asked. He nodded. “Where is she going?”

“South Dakota. Seems to be a popular place lately,” he said.

She’s coming to see me.

I didn’t need to rush down the stairs any longer. Instead I seated myself in one of the high-back leather swivel chairs, faced it in the opposite direction, and waited.

Her sweet voice filled the cabin as she talked to the pilot. “Hi, I’m Annabella Montgomery. Brice Henderson said you’d be expecting me.”

But did he tell you to expect me?

“Welcome aboard. Let me take your bag for you. Feel free to sit wherever you’d like. We will be taking off shortly,” the pilot said.

I could smell her perfume as she got closer. When I thought she was near enough, I spun my chair around and said, “If I had known you’d be here to greet me, I would have brought flowers.”

To say she looked surprised would be an understatement. She actually looked weak-kneed, and I flew out of my chair to steady her. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you to death. I…I just thought it would be romantic. I’m such a dumbass.”

She shook her head, then wrapped her arms around my neck and squeezed me tightly. We stood there, holding each other until the pilot’s voice crackled over the intercom.

“Please take your seats and secure your safety belts. We have been cleared for takeoff.”

I released my hold on her, but took her by one hand and asked, “Window seat?”

“There’s nothing out there I want to see,” she said, smiling at me.

Me neither.

She sat down in the seat I had been occupying. I bent over and locked it into position, then took the seat beside her, doing the same.

As the plane started taxiing down the runway, I reached over and took her hand in mine. “It’s not too late to change your mind,” I said.

She looked at me and said, “No. I want to be here with you.”

“Good, but I was actually talking about the destination. The jet is fueled up and we have the world at our fingertips. All we must do is tell the pilot where we want to go,” I said. I’d deal with the fallout with Brice later if he had any issues with it. “What do you say? Want to see Paris, or…”

“Colton, I don’t care if we just sit here where we are,” she replied, squeezing my hand. “It feels like forever since I’ve seen you. I have so much I want to say.”

“Me too. First, what do you want me to tell the pilot?” I asked.

“Can you tell him we changed our mind and won’t be flying anywhere?” she asked.

“You really want to sit here in the jet?”

She shook her head. “I was thinking my apartment, if that’s okay with you. We’ll have privacy and can do all the…talking we want.”

If we had privacy right now, I’d do a lot more than talk.
