CHAPTER 6

CHRIS

"Monday will be the Georgia Christian Association quarterly meeting, which should last from 10 am to 12 noon."

"Okay, sir." Sam’s iPhone keypads clatter as she types. Her soft full lips form the shapes of the words. I’ve barely been keeping it together since she entered the room for my schedule briefing ahead of next week. It seems she’s recently changed the fragrance she wears. The flowery scent has been replaced with something seductively musky that screams power. I'm this close to asking for the name but I’d be crossing the bounds of propriety.

"Anything I need to note for Tuesday?"

"Nah, Tuesdays and Thursdays are already taken care of by Jen and Zoe." She nods, already used to the super efficiency of my secretaries at Parker and Jerkins.

"Wednesday?"

"Just the usual going through documents and all. Friday, however, there's a night service at the church. The youth are having a Drama event."

"That’s going to be great. I think I've seen them around for rehearsals these past weeks."

"Yeah. To be young and vibrant again," I mused. She chuckles softly. I know she's mocking me. "You're laughing at me?" I query.

"Of course not." She places a hand over her mouth and snorts. I shake my head and she dissolves into more laughter.

"But you're barely old. Shuffling between managing such a big company and also a church — that's pretty impressive."

"Now that makes me feel better."

"Happy to be of service, sir." She performs a mock salute at me.

"Is that all?"

"That will be all, thanks." She bows slightly and makes her way out. Her hips swinging slightly in the—

Chris!

I mentally check myself, shaking my head a few times and rubbing both hands over my face. There’s no point in denying it — I’m infatuated with my secretary. Am I in some twisted Hollywood movie? I never had this problem with Sheila, Zoe, Jen, or any female secretary I ever had to work with.

God, what am I doing?

I get a ring from the reception.

"Hey, Sam."

"I have a police officer here. Detective Bryan, right?" I hear muttering on the other end. "They say they need to check our computer systems as part of their investigations."

"Okay, let them in."

A heavy-set man walks into my office moments later. His eyes do a quick scan of the room before he nods at me.

"Pastor Jenkins?"

"Yes, how might I get help? My secretary briefly informed me that you want to check out our computers as part of your investigation."

"Yes. I apologize if it’s going to be a problem but we have a leadon your former secretary's murder case that’s brought us back here."

"Really, what could that be? She stopped working here a while before her death."

"Yeah, but you see, it's not a coincidence that her dead body was found here. We have reason to believe that a business rival has something to do with this. Or at least someone who wants to ruin your business."

I’m left utterly confused by the revelation. What rivals? The competition within PR firms is quite tight, but P&J mostly works with companies, a field much less cutthroat than celebrity PR. Or could it be from Donald?
