"Have you seen my partner, Donald, about this?"

"We will soon, but since Sheila worked with you, our first stop was here."

"Our?"

"Yes, I'm with my software guy. He's at the reception already setting up."

"Here's our search warrant."

"Okay. Please go ahead. I'll make sure my secretary gets you everything you need."

"It shouldn't take long at all. In addition to our search, we’ll need to install spyware in your systems, just so we don't have to take away your computers. In doing that, we're able to keep track of possible hacking attempts or note any irregular footprints.”

"That's good."

"They’ll be uninstalled as soon as we conclude our investigations. Now I can't guarantee how long that will be, but if we keep reaching dead ends, we’ll have to close the case and automatically uninstall as well."

"That's great. Please do everything in your power to find her killer. Sheila was the sweetest soul." Detective Bryan smiles tersely and gets up.

"We’ll do our best, sir." I get up after him and escort him outside. He signals to another man seated in the reception with plain clothes.

"Sam, they’ll be installing spyware in our systems for the duration of their investigation into Sheila's death." She nods, leaves her seat, and ushers the forensics officer to it.

"This was the computer she mostly worked on, aside from helping me occasionally with the one in my office." He nods and gets to work

The set-up process for both systems takes less than 30 minutes. He slots in a flash drive and clicks on buttons then waits for a few minutes before the installation is complete.

I try to pry information from the detective during the period, but he remains tight-lipped about the investigation.

"We really can't say much about that now, Mr. Jenkins. We’re still working on it, but you can rest assured that we’re doing our best.”

I escort them out of the building, wishing them luck.

“Thanks for all the help, officers.”

“You’re most welcome. Thanks for the cooperation. Please inform your workplace we might also be visiting soon. Till then, you might want to invest heavily in some security for your computer systems."

"I'll consider that. Thanks so much."

I return to see Sam looking troubled and lost in thought as she paces in the reception. I wonder how she’s holding up with the news. The fact that Sheila is my former secretary and an unknown rival may be involved is enough to make her scared. I cough to get her attention, startling Sam who turns suddenly and trips on her feet. My reflexes kick in and I quickly catch her before she hits the floor.

"Are you okay?" I ask, searching her face for any signs of distress.

"I'm okay, just a little worried. What if this rival has planted some bugs here?"

"Honestly, I’m still confused about all this myself. I have no clue who would want to get into the church computers or anything of that sort," I say, gently setting her on the seat.

"It could be something small just sitting around. What if there's a secret camera somewhere?" The thought of somebody watching us is disturbing.

"Are they going to check P&J too?"

"The Detective said they might have to if their investigations lead them there," I tell her.

"But why would Sheila be in the mix? Why would they kill her?"

"That bothers me too, Sam…"

"Could it be that she refused to allow them to gain access to something, then she tried to out them? But that would mean they've been trying to get her for a while, so why kill her when she's left the job?" Her beautiful face was creasing with worry. I didn't like that.

"Look, it's 11 am. How about we go for brunch? I haven’t had breakfast and I don't think you have either," I say, trying to divert her attention.

"I’ve got a lot of work to do. We already lost some minutes due to the investigation. You could go, I'll order something later."

"Good, I'll order something for both of us because I'm starving, and I'm sure you are too."

"Bu—"

"No buts. Get to work and I’ll get the food."

Buying food is the least I can do. I’m going to protect her with all I have.
