“I hate that name.”

“And I hate when you don’t do as I ask.”

Taking two steps forward, he’s got me. Grabbing a handful of my hair, he roughly drags me over to the couch. I cry out as he pushes me over the back of it.

“Not the belt, please.” That’s going to fucking hurt.

He catches the skirt of my dress, but before he can lift it, there’s a knock on the door. Glancing over my shoulder, he’s eyeing the door with his eyebrows drawn together. I’m taking from his expression that he isn’t expecting anyone.

Pulling me to stand, he turns me. “Go to your room, and don’t come out until I say.”

“Why? Who is it?”

“Now, Heidi.” He gives me a death glare, and I know that means he isn’t fucking around. I quickly run down the corridor toward the bedroom I used last time. But I stop, curiosity getting the better of me.

Turning, I take my heels off and tiptoe back, pressing my spine against the wall. Milton’s holding the door open for a man I don’t know by the time I peek around the corner.

He has dark hair and is slimly built. He’s strikingly handsome in a way I can’t quite put my finger on. With a smirk, he walks inside like he has all the time in the world. Milton slams the door closed behind him. The dogs don’t move, indicating he isn’t a threat—they know him.

“You’re brave for coming here while Maxim is in the same building,” Milton says, tossing his belt onto the couch. “What’s the occasion?”

“You,” the man replies. “I’ve been hearing things.”

“And what is it you’ve heard?”

“That you’re losing it over a certain lady…who I saw tonight. Couldn’t help noticing the striking similarities—”

“Don’t go there,” Milton suddenly cuts him off.

“And your reaction only solidifies my concerns.”

“You and Maxim have your own share of problems to be concerned with, don’t you think?”

“If my big brother is getting involved, itmustbe bad.” He sighs. Not out of frustration, I don’t think. Sadness maybe? “What are you doing, Milton?”

“That’s not your concern, though I assure you she’s nothing like her.” My eyebrows draw together. Are they talking about me?

“Of course. But you must admit—”

“Vadim.” Milton glares at him, and my eyes widen.Thisis Vadim? And he’s Maxim’s younger brother? “It’s been checked out. Thoroughly. There is no connection.”

“Yes.” Vadim nods thoughtfully. “I did my own research too.”

“Of course, you did.”

Vadim shrugs with an unapologetic smile. “Your past puts you in strange situations, wouldn’t you agree?”

“My past is no longer an issue. She died.”

“I heard.” Vadim steps forward and puts his hand on his shoulder. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there. I hope you made her death slow and incredibly painful.”

“That was cancer. Not me.”

“That’s a shame. However, your girl does show that your past is still very much an issue. And we both know that’s not a good path for you to go down. Have you considered checking her DNA on her father’s side?”

“Why bother? The man’s on her birth cert.”

“That doesn’t always mean it’s true.”
