Milton’s jaw clenches. “She’s not a fucking science experiment.”

“I’m not saying she is.” I hold my breath when Vadim’s eyes suddenly dart in my direction.

Milton turns too, but I’m already running down the corridor before he sees me. When I get to my bedroom, I quietly shut the door and back away from it with my heart racing.

Hearing Milton’s footsteps coming for me, I steel my spine, refusing to let him overpower me. He can shove his punishment where the sun doesn’t shine. Not now. Not when he has a lot of explaining to do about what the hell I just heard.

Finally, after what feels like an eternity later, he stops outside my door. A few seconds pass. A minute. It reminds me of the first time he came to my room in Stonehill and waited for me to make the first move.

I don’t this time. When he opens that door, he has to explain what I overheard.

I hear his footsteps walking away instead, and I know he’s chosen not to.
