“But see, that’s exactly my fear. I want to be so much more than be a mom and a housewife,” she said. “Which makes me wonder if I’m not fit to be a mother. Maybe people like me should leave the baby making to people like your ex, who want kids more than anything. I’m not saying I don’twant kids, because I always felt I wanted them someday, but I’m also afraid of fucking my kids up the same wayIwas fucked up.”

I grinned. “The fact that you’re even thinking about things like that tells me you’re far more equipped to be a mom than you realize.”

“How so?”

“It’s a big deal to bring a human life into this world and to help them become a good person. And despite your best efforts, youwillscrew them up in ways you can’t even comprehend—that’s just the nature of being a parent. Because no one’s perfect. That’s why I wanted to wait so long until I was ready, to make sure I was doing the best job I could for my kid, right? You follow?”

“I think so …”

“That’s where I didn’t see eye-to-eye with Laura. She wanted kids so badly, it was all she could think or talk about. Which is fine; I’m not trying to badmouth her or say she’s wrong. But I wasn’t nearly as excited about kids as she was, and that made me doubt myself, and feel more like I wasn’t ready. Because I want to succeed at everything I do, Isabelle. I would take being a dad seriously, just like everything else. Thing is, I’m old enough now that I understand I’ll never reach that magical point where I finally feelone hundred percent ready.”

“So … you’re sayingyou’renot ready, either?”

“Honestly? No. I’m not. But doing things that make you uncomfortable, that make you feelvulnerable,is how you grow as a person.” I spread my hands. “What I’m saying is, I guess I’m ready to grow.”

Her jaw slowly dropped as she processed my words. She looked stunned. “Wow, Rust. You’re talking like you might actually want this baby.”

“What if I do?” I asked, slowly breaking into a smile.

She slapped her forehead. “You’recrazy. You know that, right?”

“Really, though, all I want is you. As long as I have you, we’ll find a way to make this work,” I said, and touched my hand to her tummy. Knowing there was a life inside there put a fuzzy warmth in my heart.

“I can’t believe you’re actually saying this right now,” she said. “I don’t even know what to think.”

“Wanna know what I think?” I asked. I leaned in and whispered into her ear, “I think we’re going to have a baby, Isabelle.”

She squealed a long note of happiness, thrashing her limbs in a fit of joy. “Oh my God! Rust! We’regoing to have ababy!”

I wrapped her up tight in my arms. “And you are going to make onesmokinghot mom.”

She giggled. “Me? What about you? You’ll be the hottest DILF ever. I’ll have to keep an extra close eye on you when you’re out with the little one, because I justknowall the others girls will be thirsting over you so hard. I swear, I’ll beat them off you with a stick if I have to.”

“Trust me, you won’t have to,” I said as I climbed on top of her. “You’re the only one I ever want.”

It wasalwayshot whenever our lips met—but after learning we’d created a life together, we kissed like never before. Her plump lips yielded to mine with a juicy heat, binding our hearts and souls forever. I knew the road ahead wouldn’t necessarily be easy—nothing ever was—but I was determined to fight for her no matter what.

“I’m so fucking crazy about you,” I said, stroking her hair.

“I’m crazy about you, too,” she said.

As crazy as we were about each other, a dark cloud still lingered over us. As soon as I started thinking about Johnny, the mood shifted, and I could tell Isabelle could read my mind.

“Dad’s coming to Vegas in three days,” she muttered.

“He sure is,” I grumbled.

“So what should we do?”

I took a deep breath. “We need to tell him about us. It won’t be long before you start to show. And I don’t want him finding out about us like that.”

“I agree,” she said. “Do you think we should we tell him together?”

I shook my head. “No. I’ll get your dad alone and tell him myself.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yep. He’s my best friend. He has to hear it from me first.”
