She breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank God. I was really afraid of seeing his reaction.”

“I’ll handle it,” I reassured her. “But you should probably tell him about something else first.”

Her eyebrows knitted together. “What do you mean?”

“The other things going on in your life—that you dropped out of school.”

“Oh. Ugh.” She looked uneasy and folded her arms over her chest. “You think I should tell him about my OnlyFans, too?”

I mulled it over. “That’s up to you. If I were you, I would.”

“Why?”

“Because he’s your dad. And if we want him to understand us,he needs to understandyou.”

She wore an unhappy pout. “I really hate that, Rust.”

“I know you do. And I know it won’t be easy. But the truth is the only way, Isabelle. We can’t be open about us unless we’re open about everything else.”

“Okay. You’re right. I’ll do it. I don’t knowhow,but I’ll tell him.”

“Hey.” I lifted her chin and we locked eyes. “It’s all going to work out, okay? I promise.”

“Thank you, Rust,” she said.

We kissed and I held her tight. With so much change coming our way, we stayed up late into the night, talking about the baby and trying to imagine how our new lives would be. At a certain point, it felt like we’d said everything that could be said; still, we were so excited we talked about all the things we’d already talked about, until Isabelle’s yawns became more frequent, her eyelids too heavy, and she fell asleep in my arms.

I held her close, her body rising and falling with her breath. Maybe neither of us felt ready for it, but the more I thought about it, the more my heart warmed with the knowledge that my little baby was inside her.

Isabelle was going to be the mother of my child.

All I had to do now was tell my best friend that I was going to make him agrandpain a few short months.
