After we said our byes, Johnny walked me to the door. I thanked him again and walked through the door.

“Wait, Rust,” he said, stopping me.

“What’s up?”

Johnny surprised me by grabbing me by the shoulders and pulling me in for a hug. Our chests met with athumpand he squeezed me tight. We clapped each other on the back.

“I’m sorry for being a dick,” he muttered. “It’s just so hard watching her grow up. It’s not easy to think of her as anything but my baby girl, you know? And to see her end up with my best friend—”

“I know, bud. It can’t be easy. But you’ve got my word: I’ll always treat her right. I promise.”

We pulled apart.

“Ifshe takes you back,” he reminded me, a smile in his eyes.

I chuckled. “Yeah. Big if.”

He shook his head. “Nah. You got this wrapped up, big fella. She’s wild about you.”

“Thanks, fella,” I said, as my car pulled up along the curb.

“Good luck.”
