“Carmella!” Momma and Papa scold me at the same time.

“Damn right you are, Carmella.” Fortunately, Leo lets out a rare laugh. He grabs a lock of Bea’s hair as he stares at her but addresses me and Papa. “I’ve got to say, hearing you give my cousins lip in the face of being taken, that was the only positive from that phone call. You should be proud of your daughter, Dante. She defended my wife, and for that, I will be forever grateful.”

I didn’t need his thanks. I would always defend my girls and my baby. But it’s nice for my papa to hear it.

I smirk at Bea, causing her to giggle.

Both my parents smile proudly at me.

Momma steps up and places a kiss to my blood-stained hair. “You need your rest, cara.”

Papa mimics her and strokes his palm down my face. “We’ll be back to see you tomorrow, bambina. Sergio will be waiting outside should you need him.”

They both leave quietly, my papa exchanging a few quiet words with Leo before exiting the room.

“How’s Nell?” I reposition myself to try and get comfortable.

“I’m going to see her now. I’ll get Leonardo to let Sergio know how she is, okay?”

I nod and rest my head back, wincing as I apply pressure to my right shoulder.

“Do you want me to get the nurse?” Bea asks. “They can get you some pain relief.”

She puts her hand to my left shoulder and rubs gently. I lean into her touch and she shuffles up to take me in her arms and gives me a much needed side hug.

“I… I… I don’t think I can, because of the baby,” I whisper.

Bea looks to Leo as if he needs to do something. Then we hear raised voices outside the door.

“Get out of my way, Sergio.” The angry voice growls.

“You can’t go in there. Dante said no one but family. You’ve got a nerve showing your face, I think you’ve caused enough damage in her life.” Sergio shouts.

Leonardo stiffens as he makes his way toward the door.

“I wonder who it is? Sergio never raises his voice.” I frown. It’s so unlike him.

“Let him in, Sergio, I’m in here. I’ll make sure he leaves with me,” Leonardo assures Sergio.

“Like fuck you will, Leo,” Alessandro growls as he storms into the room.

I tense in Bea’s arms and bury my head against her neck. I’m not shy by any means, but when it comes to this man, all my composure misfires. Bea squeezes me gently, letting me know she’s got me.

“I mean it, Alessandro, when Bea and I leave, so will you. That’s an order,” Leonardo growls.

“I want to see if she’s okay, is that a fucking crime? To know if my baby is alive or dead,” Alessandro barks.

I flinch at his mention of the baby. I know how much it means to me, now I’ve seen its little heartbeat. I have the pictures the sonographer gave me buried under my pillow. I can’t wait till I’m alone so I can look at them. But I think I’ve underestimated how he feels about this. Sure, he went mental at Leo last night when Leo told me to get rid of it. I have to admit that hurt. But seeing Alessandro defend our baby was surprisingly refreshing.

I can’t help but let the tears fall onto Bea’s shirt. I’m trying so hard not to cry but the whimpers are becoming vibrations in my body, that wrapped up with the pain, is damn near paralyzing.

“If you’re going to upset her, you need to leave. She doesn’t need this right now.” Bea grumbles whilst kissing the top of my head.

“I don’t want to upset you, Cam,” he huffs. “But how the fuck does Sergio know about my baby?”

I look toward the end of my bed as he perches on the edge of a chair. He looks so imposing with his shirt straining against his biceps as he sits in the chair that is way too small for his tall muscular frame.

“I needed to get to New York, he wouldn’t bring me unless I told him why. He’s my guard, we’re close. He knows everything about me,” I grumble. “As for OUR baby, I managed to ask the nurse when I woke up from surgery. They did an ultrasound while I was in the PACU. I’m still very early, five weeks plus four days, but there was a little heartbeat. The sonographer told me it’s a sign of a healthy pregnancy to see it so soon.” I hold my chin up as I meet him head-on. I’m so proud of our little fighter.
