“Fine,” I sob, unable to hold in the hurt. “If you will not recognize the babies as twins, then you will lose me and Andrea. I won’t have you make either of my children feel unloved or pit them against each other. That child that my husband is trying so desperately to find, to keep him or her out of the hands of the Mexicans is innocent and motherless. You will do as I ask, Papa, or you’ll lose me.” I shake my head and wipe the tears that are falling freely into my lap now. “I’ll be civil at events so as not to raise attention that we are not in contact, but you won’t know my children. Either of them,” I state.

Papa grabs my momma’s hand and attempts to pull her to the front door.

“Dante, stop this.” Momma pulls against his arm.

“No, Lucia, she’s made her choices, and now she will have to live with them,” Papa grunts. “Our home will always be open to you and Andrea, Carmella.”

I stare in horror as my papa makes his way into the foyer. He calls out to Momma who is staring at me with tears glistening in her forest green eyes.

“It’s okay, Momma. We’ll be okay.” I nod as I silently give her my forgiveness as she’s about to walk out of my life.

“Lucia,” Papa calls as he strolls back in to find Momma. “Let’s go.”

“No.” Momma shakes her head and walks over to wrap her arms around me.

“Lucia,” Papa groans.

“No, Dante, I’m not walking away from my daughter.” She lifts her chin defiantly. “I’m not sure how this is going to play out, but we will be there for you, cara.”

I start to sob in her hold as she squeezes me tightly.

Momma turns to give my Papa a look. If there is one thing I’ve learnt from my childhood, it’s that my papa would do anything for Momma.

Papa strolls over toward us as he wraps his muscular arms around Momma and me. He leans in to place a kiss to my tearstained cheek.

“Bambina,I just want what’s best for you and my grandson. This is not how our world works, and you know it. All these lies, you’ll get hurt, and so will that child,” Papa soothes as he strokes his hand over my hair.

“I have to do this, Papa. That baby needs me. I’m not sure how it will all work out, but I know I can be a momma to them both. I can’t leave Al, Papa.” I plead with my eyes that he sees how serious I am.

I won’t tell him how much I love Alessandro. I haven’t even told the man himself, yet.

I do love him, though, with my entire being, I love him more than anything.
