I closed my eyes against the heat building inside me. The anger was so palpable, and I knew what that meant. I remembered how angry I was that day. And I remembered what happened when I got that angry.

Taking a deep breath, I continued. “I’m not fighting about this right now. Jack. We haven’t got time. And Darla needs me. So I’m going to go help her.”

“Not alone, you’re not.”

“You can’t control me, Jack. I’m not your mate. Remember? So let go of the car door and let me get her help before it’s too late.”

He was on the other side of the car before I even realized he was moving. The passenger side door opened with a whoosh and he climbed in. As his knees banged the dashboard, he cursed and then tried to adjust the seat to allow himself room to slide in.

“You’re not going without me, Claire, and that’s final.”

“Fine. But we’re not talking about anything else. We’re simply going to save Darla.”
