When I got up on Saturday morning, I did some light cleaning, turned the dishwasher on from the night before, and sat down to read. Because Kyle liked to sleep in on the weekends, I tried to read one of my favorite books on my Kindle app. I was just getting to the good part when a soft knock came at the door. As I stood to answer it, the knock came again, this time a little more insistent.

“Hold on, impatient,” I muttered, crossing to the door to open it. “Jeez, didn’t your mother teach you not to be impatient?”

“She also taught me to be persistent,” Robbie said, enveloping me in a giant hug.

It was nice being in his arms. The warmth blooming within me had me laughing. Yet, as much as I enjoyed being in his arms, I also couldn’t get the image of him screwing Brooke out of my head, either. “Good morning to you, too. Where have you been?”

Robbie carried me into the cottage, kicking the door close behind him, before I could squirm out of his arms. “Boss gave me a few days off after doing a job for him.”

“Sleeping with Brooke,” I said, when he finally let go of me. “I know.”

His face turned a shade of red; I wasn’t sure had a name. “He told you about that?”

“Saw it too,” I replied. When he went to say something, I stopped him. “Blackmail material. I get it. You weren’t doing it because you wanted to be with her.”

“This is all so fucked up.” He ran his fingers through his dark hair. Hair I’d fisted while grinding on his lap.Ugh, stop thinking about it. Robbie and Miceli are off limits.

“Tell me about it,” I murmured. “I thought you got fired because of me.”

“Well, if it makes you feel better, I kind of jumped in his shit about the way he treats you. He can’t toss you around like you’re his personal rag doll, Collins. It’s not fair to you.”

No, it wasn’t, but that was all situated during our meeting. “No, it isn’t. Mr. Daidone and I talked everything through. We both understood we did a few wrong things, and we’ve kept things professional from now on.”

“Bull shit,” Robbie said with a small chuckle. “You gotta be kidding me.”

“Nope. It’s true. I thought he was going to fire me, Robbie. I thought he already shit-canned you, too. I won’t risk this job, not for anything in the world. So, if that means my feelings go unrequited, so be it. I have to think about more than just my pussy being fucked. Vulgar, as that sounds.”

“You’re really going to walk away from him? He let you?” Robbie stared at me as though I’d grown a second head. Plus, he was making some huge assumptions there, too. Miceli hasn’t said a word about anything, except for the fact he didn’t do relationships.

“First, he didn’t let me do anything. I didn’t give him a choice in the matter. Second, I can’t walk away from anything that wasn’t mine to begin with.” I pointed to the coffee maker. “Want a cup?”

He shook his head. “I’m on duty at the main house. Figured I’d come by and say hi. Check on you. You know the drill.”

“I appreciate it,” I replied. “It’s nice someone cares. For what it’s worth, I am so sorry I got you tangled up in my jealousy and revenge. You didn’t deserve to be treated like a piece of meat by me. Certainly not by Miceli either.”

He waved me off. “I would have gone through with it, Collins. All the way. I have no regrets about us almost hooking up.” He started for the door. “Come grab some lunch with me later. We can talk more then. Okay?”

Going to the main house meant breaking a rule I’d put into place after the meeting with Miceli. “I can’t. I told Mr. Daidone I wouldn’t be in the main house unless it was my tutoring hours.”

Robbie rolled his eyes. “You and your rules.” He laughed. “Fine, I’ll come here. Make me something good, okay, Collins?”

I nodded. “You’re on.”
