“Wow,” she whispered, her breath tickling my overheated skin. “That was... Wow.”

My chest puffed up with pride. “I could say the same.” Tipping her chin up, I pressed a kiss to her lips. “Are you okay?”

She nodded, dropping her gaze from mine. “Yeah. A little sore is all.”

I wasn’t sure if my pride doubled or if I worried more about those battered ribs of hers. “Can I hold you for a little while?”

Again, she nodded. “Yes, I’d like that.” Then she lifted her chin. “Thank you, Miceli. Of all the outcomes today could have had, you saved me.”

Stunned, I sat there, the proof of our love making dripping from us, surprised by her words. She didn’t have to thank me. I would have always helped her. No matter what. I pressed my lips to her forehead, relaxing into the chair. “You’re welcome. I only wish you wouldn’t have entered our world in such a bitter way.”

“Yeah,” she whispered on an exhale. “Me too.”

I don’t know how long we stayed like we were, cuddled up together in that chair, not wanting to move, but when the knock came at the door, I knew our cocooned reprieve was over and I’d have to wake her. From that moment on, things were about to become more intense. I only hoped I could do like I said, protect her. Because, if I lost Stephanie, the last bit of my sanity would be gone, too. I’d become the deranged killer the families always wanted me to be, and none of their lives would be spared.

That was a promise.
