Chapter Nine

Jason hid his smile. He enjoyed getting under Steph’s skin although he'd prefer stroking it, dropping kisses everywhere he touched. He'd bet that Stephanie would be in denial but enjoying it too.

When they’d first met, Steph had little self-confidence.He'd found her breath-taking in her own sweet way. After they'd become close, he’d tease her and call her his golden butterfly, since she considered herself a plain moth. With gentle persistence he'd exposed her true beauty.Knowing that she'd lived the last decade like a nun hurt him deeply.

"Well, are you coming in, or aren't you?"Waking from his stupor he realized she had the elevator door opened and was holding it as it banged against her hand.

"Yes, sorry.I guess I'm more tired than I realized."He brushed past her, making sure she felt his touch.

"Where were you?You had a dreamy look in your eye."She folded her arms and made sure she stood at least a foot away.

"I was thinking of my bed," he turned to face her."So, how are you feeling today?"

"Perfectly fine, thank you."

"You're most welcome."He moved slightly forward."You smell good...what are you wearing?"

"Perfume that Jessica gave me last Christmas."

He sniffed behind her ear."I like it.What else are you wearing?"

"What kind of question is that?"

"An innocent one."His right hand rested on the wall behind her head.

"Huh!If you must know, I'm in all black."

His mouth twitched."So, white coat, red boots, and all black underneath.Pants or a dress?"

"What difference does it make? It's too cold for a dress and you can see the bottom of my pants from my Candy Cane coat."

"I would like to see more."His eyes held hers and he could see the flicker of interest.

"I knew last night was not a very good idea."She licked her lips.

"It was a great idea."He inched closer. Her lips trembled.Even knowing that she didn't want any part of him, he still ached to give her a kiss that reminded them both what they were missing.

"Jason?"She put up two hands.

"What is it about elevators that makes a man want to do crazy things?"His arm swept around her back, bringing her mouth that much closer. His heart pounded in his chest. He could step away but didn't.Neither did she.

She lifted her chin, and her green eyes flashed.Desire, he hoped.

"How crazy?"She arched a brow.

"Like pressing the stop button and kissing you senseless."

Steph laughed."Don't be ridiculous!I'm not saying we don't like each other, because our chemistry is certainly hot. It's just that our dance is done."

He cradled her chin in the palm of his hand."Is it?"

She sucked in a breath; her body went still.

He wanted to taste her lips so badly that he didn't care if it earned him a slap. Her mouth parted.

The elevator dinged that they’d reached the main floor.

Jason heard voices, and the door slid open.He stepped away but grabbed her hand. She didn't snatch it free, allowing him to guide her through the lobby and out the hospital entrance.
