Chapter Nineteen

Hand in hand, Jason and Stephanie walked back to his car.He put his arms around her and pulled her close for a hug."You're one smart cookie, know that?"

"I learned with Jessica’s therapy that the simplest plan is always the better one."

"You've earned this."Jason took her head in his hands and kissed her softly, then dived in for more—only coming up for breath once.

She laughed, her eyes twinkling like they used to do as she caressed his face."You're pretty remarkable, Jason Monroe.Hope you don't run around giving kisses out like that, or you'll have more hearts to mend."

"Only kiss I want is from you."Jason stole another then helped her into the passenger seat.He skipped around and slid behind the wheel."Don't worry, there will be more coming."

Steph sighed with pleasure and he'd never seen her so amiable.Better strike while the fire was hot.She shivered, so he put the heater on and turned the music to the Love station, knowing how her romantic soul was fueled by songs of love.

"Thank you."She unzipped her jacket to be more comfortable and buckled up.

"You know, the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of ambushing Henry, the old goat."

She chuckled."So do I.Is that bad?"

"Naw, it's just one of the reasons why we get along so well. Our two heads think alike."

"What's the worst thing that can happen?I get fired and Nicole still needs a kidney.”Steph shot him an admiring glance.“Your plan about the pamphlets was brilliant. The hospital is such a caring environment that I wouldn’t be surprised if more than one volunteer steps up."

Stephanie unwrapped her scarf and he took that as a sign to adjust the heat."We will see about that.It was nice of you to offer to write it up.”

"Sure. What I can't get over is Henry. He must know his wife would never approve. He's putting Nicole one step closer to death each day."

"That's half the tragedy,” Jason shared.“If he lets her die, he'll go soon after. The guilt would eat him alive.I know how much he misses Mary."

"Jason, we should ask Heu to add a photo of Rhys. That'll be the clincher."

"With any luck."Jason's heart warmed when he noticed Steph's head against the window, eyes closed.Ten minutes later they pulled up to her back entrance.

"I think the visit went well and we're off to a good start."She popped her door open."I'm exhausted so I'll say goodnight."

He knew she was tired but couldn't let her go that easily."Stop!I'm walking you to your door and demanding my rights."

She gave him a saucy look."What rights are those?"

"To kiss you one more time so I can remember it as I try to sleep."

"Oh, that one.”Her green eyes sparkled.“I guess it's all right."

"I'll make sure it is."He followed her and was pleased to see the landing empty.

At her door, he moved a step closer and tugged her close."You drive me crazy, but you know that, don't you?"

She laughed, put her hands around his neck, and kissed him deeply."There!Something to dream about."

Gently, he kissed her cheek and her mouth once more."You sure you want me to leave?"

"Night, Jason. This has to work.Henry will do the right thing, won't he?"

"Yes.Now go inside and lock your door.I'm not moving until you do."

"Yeah, yeah, yeah. You can be so bossy."

He chuckled."And would you prefer me any other way?"
