“How about whist?”

“Agreed.” She nodded and fanned through her cards. To his delight, he could see she had stopped trembling, and she was smiling.

“But we should make this interesting.” He offered, holding onto the cards that remained in the deck as he held her gaze.

“How?”

“A wager.”

“I did not bring money with me if you are thinking of gambling.”

“I wasn’t thinking of gambling money,” he said and offered her a wink. The moment he did so, her lips curved into a smile. He rather wished she would keep smiling like that, as if he was the only thing that mattered in the room. “If you win, you can demand something of me. And if I win, I get a kiss.”

“A kiss?” She laughed. “That is all you want after I have crept out to see you in the middle of the night?”

“Consider it a start,” he said playfully, watching as she fanned out her cards all the more.

“I hope I win then.”

“Why? Were you hoping to ask for more than a kiss?” he asked as she began the game. When their eyes met, he could see there were lots of thoughts in her mind, for she bit her lip for a second, as if holding back what she truly wished to say.

“Begin the game, Jeremy.”

“As you wish, Sophia.”
