CHAPTER6

Sophia struggled to control her laughter as she finished her second whisky. Jeremy was sat opposite her, in such a mess with his cards that half his hand was on the floor and the other half was sticking out of his fingers at odd angles.

“I presumed you would be good at this game.”

“You thought wrong,” he said as he dropped what remained of his hand on the table. “This is not my game at all. It seems you win.”

“I win? Excellent!” She clasped her hands together in delight. How nervous she had been when she first arrived seemed an age away now. It was easy to talk freely with Jeremy as he made an attempt to collect the cards once again and drop them in the middle of the table. “Does that mean I get to ask something of you, as per our wager?”

“Ask me anything you like.” His tone had become something more suggestive, making her wriggle in her seat before she fell still and leaned on the card table between them. He matched her stance and leaned forward too, so that they were both merely inches apart.

His proximity made the hairs on her arms stand up on end. She had never known this feeling with her husband when he wanted to visit her bed. It was never exciting, never tantalizing.

“Rachel says taking a lover can be exciting,” Sophia began slowly, uncertain how to frame her words.

“Is this a question or a statement?” he asked playfully, tilting his head to the side.

“I have never known that feeling, Jeremy.” Her words seemed to bring a serious to the air. His smile dropped and he stared at her.

“Then you have been doing it with the wrong man.”

“And you think you’re the right man?”

“Let’s see.” He moved toward her.

“How – hmm!” She didn’t get chance to ask anymore. He had lifted himself up a little and moved his lips to hers across the table.

The kiss was firm at first, startling her enough to lean back, then his lips softened. It was anything but the chaste kisses her husband had given her. Already, Jeremy was moving his lips against Sophia’s, teaching her that a kiss could be something alive with movement. They seemed to dance together, before Sophia felt Jeremy abruptly move back from her.

She almost whimpered at the loss of contact, then she noticed what he was doing. He rounded the card table toward her and took her hand, lifting her up from her chair before pressing his lips to hers again.

This time, he parted her lips and took her tongue with his own. This sort of dance was much more intimate. That passion made Sophia arch backward, feeling tilted back by Jeremy, to the point that she almost fell on the table. He righted her to her feet again and their lips parted, both breathless, though his arms were still around her. She was very aware of the way his palms lingered on the curve of her waist, static, even when she wished them to move.

“Tell me… did your kisses ever feel like that?” he whispered so close to her that it was almost against her lips.

“Never.”

He went to kiss her again when she pulled back.

“I haven’t yet asked you my question,” she said, capturing his attention. He smiled widely and stood back a little, though his hands still rested on her waist. Sophia felt her hands trailing up his arms. They seemed to move of their own accord. She wished she could blame the whisky for it, but she had a feeling it had nothing to do with the liquor.

“What is your question?” he said softly, waiting for her to speak.

“You spoke of other things that could happen at night. Something other than sex,” she murmured, worried her nerves would return. “Would you show me what they are?”

Jeremy bent his head toward her, his lips moving to hers. Sophia was convinced he was going to kiss her again when he moved his head and kissed along her neck. She gasped at that sensation, before he moved his lips to her ear, whispering there.

“I will.” With these final words, he moved his lips back to her neck and began kissing her there. When he nipped her playfully, she gasped at that touch, amazed he could find such a sweet spot on her neck.

Sophia soon lost track of those kisses. She was aware of Jeremy lifting her by her waist to sit on the card table. It shook beneath them for a second, the legs moving across the floorboards so that it rattled, then it fell still.

Jeremy’s kisses moved down her neck and across the opening of her gown. When he curled a finger around the ivory white silk and pulled it down, revealing more of her breast, Sophia gasped, wondering what he would do. His kisses travelled over her exposed skin all the more, teasing her with their softness. When he grew bold and moved to the valley beneath her breasts, making his kisses firmer, Sophia tipped back her head and moaned. Spreading her hands on the table beneath her, she leaned back, indulging in his touches.

Jeremy soon stood straight, only he did not return his kisses to her lips. Instead, his attention was on the skirt of her gown. Sophia watched what he was doing, seeing how he bundled her skirt around her hips. His eyes connected with hers, as if silently asking her if this was all right. When she nodded, his hands curled around her legs, just above her knees, and he parted her legs wide.

Sophia felt a fire start within her as he set his body between her legs, brushing their centers together. He had long since shed his tailcoat. It meant that as she let her hands wander over him, she could explore the feeling of his toned arms beneath his shirt sleeves and travel her palms down his waistcoat.

When his lips found hers again, the passion overtook Sophia. She leaned up against him, not wanting him to stop his kisses this time. He seemed to understand, for he took her tongue with his own, taking her breath with it, as he lowered his hands to her legs.
