Zach’snarrowed gaze passed from Olivia to me.

“What?” Iplaced my hands on my knees, rubbing them back and forth. “It’snot like Ibroke my word.”

“If you ever think about switching careers and becoming an attorney, you’ll always have aplace with us.” Zach smirked.

“Laura can do anything. She’sawesome.” Olivia put an arm around me, kissing my temple.

“Yeah.” Zach’swarm eyes wandered over my face, my lips and cheeks and nose, ending up on my eyes. “She sure is.”

The two of them quieted after that, expecting my reply. Since I’dbeen too choked up, emotionally and physically, to say anything more, Igrabbed one of the burgers and chewed up the biggest bite Icould take.

Zach’sattention never faltered. My whole mouth was filled with meat and ketchup and adisintegrated bun and he stayed focused with his unreadable gaze. Unreadable and hot. Ireached for my wineglass and washed down the burger, breaking our invisible and way too heavy connection.

“So, Olivia,” he addressed her, pretending like nothing had happened just now. Maybe it hadn’t. The long hours and lack of sleep made me imagine things. “In my opinion, out of all the countries you said you wanted to visit, I’dsay start in Europe. The jet lag’sabitch—”

“Language,” Imumbled.

“It’snot fun, but you get to catch aton of history even on ashort visit.”

Igave him athumbs-up, and Olivia continued calling himold manand explaining she’dprobably party or go to the beach if she had time off work. We laughed and talked and ate, enjoying each other’scompany and forgetting about the movie.

At around eleven, Olivia’syawns outgrew her small palm, her mouth gaping like alion’s. Taking the hint, Ipiled the plates one on top of the other and went to set them in the sink.

Olivia let out another yawn. “Ilike this evening-off concept.”

Istuck my head out from washing the dishes. “Don’tget used to it.”

Her reply went unheard under the sound of the running water. Ifigured it must’ve been something along the lines ofYeah, Momor another snarky retort, and Ilaughed to myself while scrubbing the food remnants off the plates and placing them on the dish rack.

The rinsing and water made me oblivious to Zach and Olivia’sconversation. Or rather made me unaware of the sudden silence and Zach’sfootsteps as he came from behind me.

“Ididn’ttell you how hot you look in these jean shorts today,” he murmured into my ear, placing his palm flat on my stomach and pressing himself into my back, his hard length confirming just how hot he thought Iwas.

The touch had me shivering and gripping the counter for support. I’dgone without sex for three weeks before him, alot more than three weeks sometimes, yet I’dnever missed it so much to have that kind of intense physical reaction.

“Zach, you promised,” Ibreathed out, my voice not sounding convincing even to my own ears.

He gestured toward the living room with his head. Ireacted slowly, making as little friction as possible, which wasn’tvery possible, and Zach growled, nibbling on my ear. Iswatted his mouth away because all Iwanted was for him to do more of it. With asmall portion of my senses intact, Iturned back to see Olivia plopped on the couch, her eyes closed, one of her arms dangling down.

Sleeping.

The hard work had taken its toll on her, to pass out this quickly. But Iwasn’ttoo sorry about it. Because despite my strong objections to having adult time with Zach, Icraved him more than ever.

Not to mention his eyes. These goddamn light blue eyes that darkened with each passing second.

Maybe if Imoved Olivia to her room…

“It was just asuggestion, don’tworry about it.” Zach turned and lifted the once again full paper bags, with trash rather and fresh food. “I’ll take out the trash and be gone.”

“Zach.” Igripped his forearm. “Can you not be gone after the trash?”

Zach assessed me, getting aread on my level of seriousness. Whatever he saw there must’ve convinced him, nodding once and leaving the door ajar.

In the few minutes Ihad, Icarried Olivia to the guest room. She curled into me instinctively and Ihated prying her off me when we reached her bed.

“He really likes you,” she mumbled.

Ipulled back, not sure Ihad heard her correctly. Her eyes were closed, her breath shallow. She was asleep and Iwas being paranoid. Iblew out air and walked outside to meet Zach back in the living room. He waited for me on the couch, feet down, fully clothed.
