When he pulled away and looked into her eyes, Isabella couldn’t help herself. “I love your cologne.”

He shook his head. “Don’t you mean you love me?”

Her eyes narrowed as she cocked her head to one side. She remembered long ago when hate had been the topic of that question rather than love. She nodded, amazed by the truth that settled in her heart. “I do.”

He kissed her again, and Isabella wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him back. She did love him. She honestly loved him. Never had she expected to confess such a thing on this day. She had only intended that they mightat least agree to consider her father’s desire for them to be together.

When the kiss ended, Isabella had only one thought on her mind. She searched Aaron’s face for the truth. “Do you love me?”

“I thought that was evident, but let me make myself clear. I do. I never intended to, but I’ve fallen in love with you.”

“Well, that makes it easier. And one more thing on which we agree.” She wondered what he would say next. Would he ask Papi for her hand?

“I need to go get your father for dinner.” He started walking her back to the plaza. “I’ll talk to him about our mutual feelings.” He grinned. “If you’re all right with that?”

“I am.” Isabella searched the crowd. “I’ll find Mama and tell her.”

He dropped his hold on her. “Isabella, are you sure about this?”

“Are you?” she countered.

“Surprisingly enough, yes.” He shrugged. “I think your father could see something that neither of us could. We fit together perfectly.”

Isabella nodded. “We do.” She laughed. “Mama said God told Papi we belonged together.”

Aaron nodded. “I guess He’s told us as well.”

“I wish He would have done it sooner.”

Aaron laughed. “It probably wouldn’t have mattered if He had. We would have both ignored Him.” He seemed as hesitant to leave as she was to let him go. “Look, I’ve got to go. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

“See you at dinner.”

She waved good-bye with her handkerchief, awestruck by all that had just happened. They had known each other for years but ignored each other because of their feelings ofcontempt. How strange to see that contempt transformed into love.

Without warning, her vision went black as someone pulled a hood over her head. She tried to yell, but a hand quickly covered her mouth. Panic flooded through her.

What was happening?
