Chapter Four

Alex

I feel like a little kid on Christmas, giddy and excited as I’m getting ready for my date. I glance at my phone again to see the two matches I’ve been paired with and I’m hit with a fresh wave of it.

When someone had told me there was a new dating app that catered to polyamorous people, I kind of scoffed, expecting some kind of oversexed Tinder rip-off or something, but when I’d actually looked into it, I discovered something totally different.

It wasn’t like anything I’d seen before, with no interaction between you and your match (or matches) before sending you off on a date. I liked that, the idea of just kind of being forced to create something organically on the spot.

And then, upon exploring the Mix n Match feature, I’d found something even cooler.

I’d been in a couple of polyamorous relationships before, some of which had actually ended pretty badly, but honestly, after the first one, I think part of me knew that there was no going back.

I’d been used by couples just looking to “spice things up,” I’d been played for sex, I’d seen it all, but it didn’t deter me. I knew deep down that while I could be happy in a monogamous relationship, I’d feel infinitely more fulfilled in an open one.

So I decided to sign up, paying the membership fee, and waited. Not all that long, though. A few hours later, I received one match, but while I was trying to accept it, the app had crashed, knocking out for a few minutes while they rolled out an update. When it reloaded and I logged back in, I had a second match.

Presumably since I’d matched with them separately, I was guessing that they were both single and I wasn’t meeting with a couple, but maybe I was wrong and that was why I’d ended up matching them both?

Anything was possible, and I couldn’t wait to meet them both.

I like all kinds of people, but I have to admit, I’ve always sort of had a soft spot for blondes, and both of them are. The man, Theo, is more sandy-blonde and tan with a hint of scruff around his jaw. The woman, Josie, on the other hand, has these golden curls hanging around a soft, sweetly smiling face and glittering blue eyes.

They’re both ridiculously attractive, but I wonder what they’re like. I glance at the clock again and my heart leaps. Finally, it’s time for me to head out. I give myself one last once-over in the mirror before heading out to my car.

The drive over is a blur, I’m so distracted. And when I pull up at the restaurant, I’m early anyway. But even so, I head inside, figuring if I’m the first one here, I can grab the table and maybe get a round of waters for us or something.

I swear, my heart races faster with every step I take into the place. I get inside and look around, and I think it skips a beat. Theo’s beaten me here, and he’s already sitting at a table, looking adorably fidgety and nervous.

He looks up as I approach and scrambles to his feet. Fuck, he’s even cuter in person. And once he’s on his feet, I’m surprised to see that he might actually be taller than me. Not something I’m used to at six foot two, but he’s easily got at least two or three inches over me.

And he’s built, too, with sculpted muscle on every inch of that body. I know immediately that I want his body: both on top of me and for myself, I wish I was that cut. “Hi, Alex?”

His voice is lower than I’m expecting, a deep bass that rumbles through me in a way I find deeply sexy. The sound of my name on his lips…fuck.

I have to swallow before I can speak, and I reach for his hand. “Hi, yeah, you must be Theo,” I say with a smile.

“That’s right,” he smiles back and shakes my hand, and just that palm-to-palm touch is downright electric.

I notice that his palms are a little sweaty, and it’s kind of endearing that he’s nervous. “It’s nice to meet you,” I grab a seat at the table.

“Yeah, same,” he sits back down.

A server comes by with a pitcher full of ice water and three glasses. “Can I get you guys anything else for right now?” she asks.

“Nah, just the water is great, we’re still waiting on one more,” Theo says with a smile.

She sets a glass in front of each of us and fills it, then fills the third empty, leaving it in front of the unoccupied space at the table. “Just flag me down if you need anything,” she says, then off she flits to take care of other customers.

“So, Theo, you from here?” I ask once we’re alone.

He tilts his head. “Mostly. I was born in Vermont, but my family moved here when I was about 4, so this is really the only home I remember. How about you?”

“Moved here about three years ago,” I say, taking a sip from the water glass, “I’ve kind of done a lot of bouncing around. Grew up in Colorado, then wound up in Idaho for a while, then Florida…and now here.”

“Military family or something?” he asks.

I shake my head. “Nah, just rootless,” I laugh.
