I was trying to distract myself from how much I really missed Maverick.
“He’s across the country,”I said. “He’s doing whatever he does when he’s away. This is not a serious thing.”
“It could be,” Zoe said.
“Why though?” I asked.
“Why not?” Eva asked. “The guy is-”
“He’s hot, I know. He’s sexy. He’s amazing in bed. That doesn’t mean we have to rush off and get married. In fact, what we have is perfect.”
“What? A friends with benefits thing?” Zoe asked.
“Yes,” I said. “That’s exactly what it is. We just have to be secret about it.”
“For the same reason you’re worried about taking pictures at a wedding,” Eva said. “This is crazy.”
“It’s not crazy,” I said. “Being secret is fun. Makes it hotter. There’s a risk to it.”
“But he’s out of town,” Zoe said. “Why not go out and find some more fun?”
“Because she’s secretly committed to him,” Eva said.
“Really? That’s what you think? Watch this then…”
I grabbed my phone.
Hey Mav. Just wanted to let you know I hope you enjoy your time out there. Go enjoy yourself. You know what I mean?
I sent the text and dropped my phone.
“There,” I said. “Nothing to worry about. He can go out and fool around. I can do the same. It’s not a big deal.”
“So let’s go out,” Zoe said. “I have a friend in a band and she’s-”
“I have to get ready for this wedding,” I said.
“Excuses,” Eva sang in a sour note.
My phone vibrated.
Maverick replied.
What are you talking about? Enjoy my time?
“What did he say?” Zoe asked.
“He agrees,” I lied.
I texted Maverick back.
You know what I mean. Just that things are what they are between us. So enjoy your time. Don’t pass up any fun because of me.
I sent the text and hated myself for sending it.
“What did you just text him?” Eva asked.
“You know what?” I asked. “I’m getting tired. You two should leave.”
