“I’m sure she’s going to come back to the cabin to drag me out. She seems to be very insistent on me being that.”

“Do you have any indication of what she wants with you?”

“No, and I don’t want to find out.”

Max was silent for a moment. Then he reached out and took her hand.

“Come with me. We’ll go to my place.”

“What?”

“You’re not going to get any peace tonight. You can have some peace and quiet away from your family at my cabin.”

Was she really going to do that? Spend the night with someone she barely knew? Then again, someone who was pretty much a stranger was showing her more kindness than her own mother. He wasn’t looking to hurt her. And Mary just wanted to get through the night painlessly until her father came to get her.

It was her night now. And she could do what she wanted. Mary nodded.

“Okay. Lead the way.””
