Chapter Six

SENDING MESSAGES

GIOVANNI

I know that everything has just changed. Egypt might have a boyfriend now, but it can’t be that serious. The connection that’s always been there is more prominent than ever. I had to restrain myself from touching her more than I did. As much as I want Egypt, I have to protect her. If I get involved with her romantically, she will be an even bigger target for my enemies. The fact that she’s already a target just by working so closely with me is something that I constantly fight myself over.

But I’m selfish, and I can’t let her go. I also can’t be with her the way I want to either. I’ve always known that Egypt is attracted to me. I thought it was just a crush at first. And unlike other assistants that I’ve had, she kept it professional and never came onto me.

I thought it was a passing phase because it seemed like she lost interest in me, and with the appearance of this new boyfriend, I was convinced that I’d lost her. But it looks like she’s open to being with me. So it’s probably best if I let her go with her little boyfriend and be happy.

“Yeah right! Like I would ever let that shit happen,” I mumble to myself as I run my hands through my hair.

My eyes are open and I see Egypt in a new light. My mind is made up. She will be mine. I just have to keep rules in place to keep things in order.

I take a deep breath and head back to the party. I have to put thoughts of Egypt on hold for a moment. If Mancini’s people find out my obsession with her, I would have to lock her in a tower and throw away the key to keep her safe.

I’ve already got my men watching her without her knowledge; I’ll have to buff up security after tonight, though. But, my attention on her was impossible to miss, and I know others noticed—especially mydate.

Carly’s envy couldn’t have been any clearer unless her skin turned green. And although she didn’t go Incredible Hulk on me yet, I know her tantrum is coming. The thing is, I don’t care to deal with it.

I would normally appease her by promising dinner and giving her some trinket to shut her up. But I won’t do that this time. Carly has to learn her place, and it’s not by my side. She serves a sexual purpose and nothing more. Carly’s time has come to an end.

I open the door to the study just as my cousin Mario strides towards me. I can tell something is wrong by the cold look on his face. Mario is the light-hearted jokester out of the two of us, and he’s never without his smile.

“Cousin?” I question when Mario gets close.

“They’re right outside the property. About ten miles,” Mario says.

I know he’s talking about the Mancini crew without him saying it out loud. We knew they would be here. They couldn’t resist trying to hit such a lucrative event. They are still trying to make a name for themselves, and their stupidity leads them to believe trying me will do it. The problem is they shouldn’t know about the party, but they do. That’s an issue we will have to figure out.

“They’re waiting for the party to end,” I say out loud with a nod. Maybe they do have some smarts. Because hitting the party with all these high-profile people here would be detrimental to the entire Mancini family.

“If they move any closer before the party ends, end them.” Mario nods and walks away to give the order.

I walk leisurely back toward the party, but before I reach the main room where the guests are, Congressman Wyatt stops me.

The man has his uses, but he definitely thinks he’s worth more than he is. Give a man a little political power, and they think they run you. I could ruin his entire career and demolish his bloodline without a second thought if I wanted to. The thing is, the congressman isn’t smart enough to see that.

“Wyatt. Having a good time?” I question, but I don’t really give a shit. I know he wants something, but he likes to play twenty questions before getting to the point.

“I’m having a wonderful time. I must say the entertainment is top-notch.” The man gives a sneaky little grin, and I want to punch him in his smug face.

“Hmmm. Well, glad you’re enjoying yourself. Excuse me.” I dismiss him easily because I don’t have the patience to be civil with this asshole right now.

His time as a congressman is coming to an end anyway. He just doesn’t realize it yet. You can’t let a man like Wyatt know you have the upper hand. His downfall will be that much sweeter because he doesn’t know it’s coming.

“You know you have a diamond in that pretty little assistant of yours. You better hold onto that one.” Wyatt says cryptically, still wearing that stupid little grin.

“Egypt’s place will always be with me,” I state.

“Unless she finds a better opportunity. You never know, with the right amount of persuasion…” Wyatt shrugs, “Egypt could make any powerful man happy.”

I am not a stupid man, and I know exactly what game the congressman is playing. However, I don’t knowwhyyet.

“Egypt’s place will always be with me,” I say again, then I walk away.

I’ll have to keep an eye on Congressman Wyatt, but I have other shit to worry about for now.
