“What did you need to talk to me about?” I say once my brain cells start firing again.

“You told me he was just a friend.” I want to smile because of the obvious jealousy that drips from Giovanni’s every word. Instead, I nod my head.

“He was, now he’s not.” I nonchalantly shrug.

Giovanni stops swaying and abruptly pulls me off the dance floor and into a back hall. I’m practically running to keep up with his long stride, but I don’t stumble even though my stilettos are high as hell.

He pulls me into a study and slams the door behind us. I’m staring at him wide-eyed because I can’t believe he just did that. If anybody saw us, you would think we had a lover’s quarrel.

“What the hell?” I say once he releases my arm. “People are going to think something inappropriate is going on.”Not that I actually care, but I had to say that because… fake boyfriend.

“Fuck people. You should’ve told me you had a boyfriend.” He growls in my face, and I swear my panties disintegrate off my body.

“You know now. What’s the problem?” I challenge boldly.

“What’s the problem? Are you fucking kidding me right now? You know who I am. He could be an informant or some shit.”

Right! He’s worried about his business, not about me having a boyfriend.I gather myself so I don’t show how disappointed I am before addressing his concerns.

“Smith is a doctor who I’ve known almost my entire life. He’s not an informant. He only knows about G.C.D. Not the illegal business.”

“Egypt,” Giovanni says my name like he’s about to lose his shit. “You brought your boyfriend to the illegal business.”

“Smith, like everyone else, thinks this is some fancy fundraiser. So he’s not going to be an issue.” I sigh, my disappointment slipping through just a little.

“He better not be,” Giovanni growls again, and I want to roll my eyes at him.

“Is that what you pulled me across the room for?” I ask, slipping attitude into my voice. If I can’t show my disappointment, I can show my snark.

“Don’t push me, little girl. You don’t know what you’re asking for.” Giovanni says, getting in my face again. I back up until my back is up against the door, and he follows my every step.

My experience with intimate situations is limited, but this definitely feels like more than a boss and employee type thing. My breathing picks up, and I think I’m going to pass out from the spicy scent of his cologne.

Giovanni runs a finger down my cheek, and I gasp. He bites his lip, and his eyes roam over my body. Then he takes a step back. What the hell is happening?

“Make sure your boyfriend stays in his place.”

“My boyfriend. Right. Not a problem,Mr. DeLuca.”

Giovanni squints his eyes before he pulls me from the door and opens it. I don’t say anything else as I take a deep breath and leave. The door closes behind me, and I’m glad Giovanni didn’t follow me. Now, I can lick my wounds in private.

I think I just gave my grumpy boss another reason not to admit his attraction. I guess we have to nix operation fake boyfriend. Dammit!
