“This has Mancini written all over it. That’s why Wyatt’s ass has been itching to talk to you. He thinks he has another backer,” Mario responds with a sneer on his handsome face.

I know it’s serious if Mario is pissed. He has the most inappropriate sense of humor I’ve ever encountered, and he doesn’t take too much of anything seriously.

I’ve heard the name Mancini a few times, but only in passing. Giovanni usually clams up when the name is mentioned, so I know it’s a point of contention. I would never overstep my position and ask because even though I know about Giovanni’s Capo business, he doesn’t officially involve me.

So, even though I handle all G.C.D. Corporation business and his schedule for basically his entire life, DeLuca business is none of mine. Officially.

I should probably mention the fact that the Congressman wants me to work for him, but since I would never consider it and Giovanni has enough on his plate, I will let it go. At least for now.

“Giovanni, it seems ya’ll have plenty offamilybusiness to discuss, so I will move a few things around.” I volunteer as I gather up my tablet.

I know when to take my leave from a room, especially one filled with so much tension you can damned near choke on it. Whatever is happening with the Congressman isn’t as simple as a threat.I knew his ass was up to no good at the party.

“Stay close, baby. I don’t want you leaving without Joey or Carlo. As a matter of fact, I don’t want you to leave without me.” Giovanni’s eyes are still blazing, so I know he’s serious.

“Umm. Yeah, of course.” He just called me baby in front of all of his men. He’s been doing that a lot lately, but it still throws me off. I’ve never heard him be affectionate to anyone before.

Giovanni hits the button as I leave the office, and the glass frosts over. I shut the door behind me, and I make sure the scanner is engaged. Giovanni is serious about both his privacy and security. In his line of work, it’s a necessity if you want to live.

“There’s some major shit going down, E,” Daniel says as he comes into my office and shuts the door behind him.

“How so?” I ask because even though I know most of what goes on, Daniel always has the good tea.

“Carly Lambert was arrested today.” Daniel leans up before looking around my office.

I know he closed the door, and it’s only us in here… but I look around too. Hell, I want to know how Ms. White Privilege herself got arrested.

“What the hell did she do that her daddy couldn’t get her out of?” The Lambert’s have too much pull in Nashville for Carly to just get arrested. They would’ve covered that up like it never happened if it was something minor, which means it was definitely something major.

“Actually, her daddy was arrested too. Damn near the whole fucking family went down for money laundering, insider trading, and blackmail. They were into some dirty shit.” Daniel shakes his head, and my eyes widen in shock. The shock isn’t from all the dirt they were doing, but the fact that they were actually arrested.

“Oh my goodness! What the hell? That’s a whole lot of charges.” I state, shaking my head.

“Yep,” Daniel pops the p and chuckles. “Giovanni warned her to stay away from him, but her ass didn’t listen.” Daniel’s words shock me again.

“You mean to tell me, Giovanni had Carly arrested?” I whisper even though I know my office suite is secure and nobody can hear us talking. “Why didn’t I know this?”

I don’t know how the hell I missed that. I can’t believe Giovanni would do that…On second thought, I can believe it.

“You’re not supposed to know everything all the time. Besides, I might be the second assistant, but I’m stillfamily.” Daniel winks. Then he gets up and breezes out of my office like he didn’t just spill the hottest tea I’ve ever sipped.

I believe that Giovanni is purposely keeping things from me. We haven’t been on a need to know basis since I was his second assistant. Even Daniel knows more about what’s happening around here than I do.

And I know something else is going on because why can’t I leave without him? Why must somebody be with me at all times?

Giovanni has always said that our close proximity made me a target, and I believe him. So when we had a conversation about our relationship status, I wanted to keep what was between us private. And although his men know, to be honest, I didn’t want everyone in the office to know we were sleeping together now. I didn’t want people to think I got my job by getting on my knees. And it’s not that I wanted to keep what we have a secret. I just don’t think it’s anyone else’s business.

So, this new security concern for me is suspicious. It’s time I asked more questions about what’s going on. I have buried my head in the sand for long enough.

I gathered up my courage to go inside Giovanni’s office to ask him what the hell is going on around here. I take a deep breath and stand from my chair. I step inside Giovanni’s office, but their backs are to me, and they're so deeply engaged in conversation nobody notices my entrance.

“Buddy is going to be pissed if you don’t tell him about you and Egypt. He only asked you to make sure she didn’t leave by giving her a job. He didn’t say start a relationship,” Nick’s voice rumbles, and I am completely dumbfounded.

“We’re not in a relationship, Nicky. How many times do I have to keep telling ya’ll that. Egypt is good at what she does. I just want her to…” Giovanni stops talking when he finally notices me.

“You just want me to what? Suck your dick without any extra pay, while I still do a fantastic fucking job as your assistant as well… is that what you were about to say?” I calmly ask. Because I can’t be mad. I’m the one who started this thing between us, but that doesn’t mean his words don’t cut me deep.

“That’s not what I meant, baby. I…” Giovanni starts, but I hold up my hand to stop his lies before they even fall from his pretty mouth.

“I did this to myself.” I shake my head in complete disappointment, “I would give a two weeks’ notice but Daniel is more than capable of doing the job. He knows more about what’s going on than I do anyway, so I quit.”

I quickly turn and leave the office, grabbing my purse, and I practically run to the elevator. It must be my lucky day because it opens immediately, and I hop on. But there was no need for me to rush because nobody was chasing me anyway.

“I did this to myself.”
