Chapter Thirteen

LET HER GO

GIOVANNI

“You need to make this right, G. Go after your woman,” Nicky says in a stern fatherly tone he used with Mario and me when we were snot-nosed kids following him around.

“You know I can’t do that. Egypt is hurt right now, but I will explain it to her later. It’s best if she’s away from here anyway. If Wyatt is working with Mancini and his crew, then he will definitely target Egypt. I need to keep her safe.” I tell the men who are more like siblings than cousins to me.

I hope they understand that this isn’t a decision that I take lightly. When Egypt left over two hours ago, of course, I wanted to run after her. But it’s only temporary. She’s safer right now if peoplethinkshe quit. Because no matter what she said, she will never be able to walk away from me.

“You’re the boss. But I still think you’re making a mistake. You know how stubborn E can be. She might not accept your apology.” Mario says with a shake of his head.

“Who the fuck is apologizing? I’ll just tell her she made a mistake. She took what she heard out of context.”

“I hope you’re fucking kidding.” Nicky frowns at me, and I return it.

“Why the fuck would I be kidding?” I ask, confused, but Nicky just shakes his head at me.

I don’t know why I’m even entertaining his ass. He’s five years older than me, and I don’t ever remember seeing him in a serious relationship. You don’t take relationship advice from a person who isn’t in a relationship.

“You just said you aren’t with Egypt, and she fucking heard you. Don’t you think that’s a bit harsh?”

“No. Egypt knows we aren’t in a relationship. She knows what’s what.”

“I can’t believe you’re this fucking dumb.” Nicky scowls at me.

I’m getting tired of his holier than thou attitude. I know what the fuck I’m doing. I treat Egypt differently because she is. I feel things for her that I’ve never felt in my life. It doesn’t negate the fact that we’re not in a relationship. I can’t be in a relationship with her.

“You said she broke up with fake Thor to be with you. So, maybe she thought you were in a relationship. And come on, G. You spend every waking hour with her,” Mario says, like I don’t know how I spend my time.

“Listen, she didn’t end her relationship for me. I saw fake Thor at the restaurant. He told me they broke up right after the Garden party, and that’s why he was on a date.”

When Egypt ran off to the restroom that night, I saw her little boyfriend. Before he left, I made sure to talk to him about what the fuck was going on. I may not have wanted Egypt in a conventional way, but I didn’t want her to be with anyone else either.

Yeah, I’m a selfish fucker! Who cares… you don’t get what you want by being a sap. I’m a savage.

“Okay, man. If you say so. But when this shit blows up in your fucking face, don’t say shit to me about it,” Nicky responds, and I flip him the bird.

My cousin is being dramatic. Egypt knows me. She’ll understand that I had to let her go so that Wyatt wouldn’t target her. I will keep Carlo and Joey on her security. As a matter of fact, I will add a few more men just to be sure she isn’t left vulnerable.

“Don’t worry about Egypt. Everything will be copacetic. I will let her know exactly what’s happening when we get this Mancini situation under control. And I’ll explain to her about Buddy. Egypt will understand.”

“I tried. But you remember this fuckin’ conversation. Because when I say I told you so, I want you to admit I was right,” Nicky smugly replies like the know-it-all he tends to be sometimes.

“What the fuck ever man.” I frown at my cousin.

“Okay, I’m tired of you two and the back and forth. What’s the plan to handle Mancini and Wyatt? We just took care of the Lambert’s, so the Governor is not going to help us with Wyatt like he did with them. He owed us a favor, so we’re even now. We definitely don’t want to be indebted to his crazy ass,” Mario says his exasperation written all over his face.

No matter how frustrated Mario is with me and Nicky, he’s right about the Governor. Governor Harold is a lunatic, but he’s smart and a great ally to have. But we definitely don’t want to be in his debt, especially so soon after cashing in ours. I need to think of another way to push the congressman off his high horse.

My original plan was to get him voted out of office, but that won’t be helpful for another year. I need his ass out of office immediately.

“I think the congressman might need to have an accident of some kind,” Nicky says, and I nod my head.

Wyatt definitely needs to be put down permanently. It needs to be clean without any links to my family or me.

“We can turn them against each other, Mancini and Wyatt are suspicious by nature. They are working together out of necessity, not out of trust.” I say out loud, a plan forming in my mind at what we need to do.
