“Do you need something, Carly? I told you, Giovanni’s meeting doesn’t end until twelve. So you will have to wait for another,” I look at the clock to check the time, “thirty-five minutes before he’s available.” It takes the entirety of my acting skills to keep my voice pleasant and a frown off my face, but by the grace of Viola Davis, I succeed.
“I think it’s inappropriate that you call Giovanni by his first name. You’re the help, and you should call him Mr. DeLuca.”
Nobody in the office calls Giovanni, Mr. DeLuca. So, I know Carly knows what she’s doing when she makes snide racist comments like that. She wants me to act a fool and whoop her ass so she can call me an animal and play the victim. I wouldn’t give her the satisfaction. But it takes everything in me, plus prayer and God’s love not to shove my fist down her throat. And I’m not even a violent person.
I abruptly stand up, and Carly steps back quickly with a gasp. She puts her hand to her chest, and I smile. I run my hand down my fitted pencil skirt and walk around my desk. Carly retreats further back with wide blue eyes. Carly doesn’t want this smoke even with all her bravado. I can tell she’s all talk.
I hit the button on my phone, and the second assistant picks up. “Daniel, I’m going to lunch.Carly,” I stress her first name on purpose, “is waiting forGiovanni.Please be sure to let him know his guest is here when he gets out of his meeting.”
“Okay, Egypt. I’ll let him know. Have a nice lunch.”
“Thanks, Daniel. I will.” I smile as I click off the call and retrieve my purse from my desk.
“You can wait outside with Daniel.” Carly purses her lips, but she doesn’t reply as she sashays out of my office and takes a seat in the waiting room.
I close the door behind me and wave at Daniel as I leave. I’ll need another raise if I have to keep dealing with Giovanni’s women because nobody should have to deal with their boss’s lovers, especially if they’re dying to be one of them.
