Chapter Two

DISTRACTIONS

GIOVANNI

I have been in this meeting all morning with a few of the Tennessee Sports and Gaming commissioners, and it’s obvious that these people are incompetent. Actually, incompetent is too mild a word to describe the morons that I’ve been dealing with.

But I guess I shouldn’t complain too much. If they weren’t so inept, I wouldn’t get away with half the shit that I do. I would probably spend a lot more money on lawyers as well. I should probably be more thankful. But what can I say? Ineptitude annoys the fuck out of me.

My face is stony as I listen to the little weasel lie his way through an explanation. The decorative words he uses doesn’t hide the fact that his ass is looking for a kickback. At least, he’s smart enough not to just come out and say he wants money for his vote.

“So, you see, Mr. DeLuca, the vote on passing the increase for online gambling will affect businesses like yours all over the world.”

“I see.”

“That’s all you have to say?” The commissioner can’t hide his irritation, and I almost want to smile. I’ve been doing this far longer than anybody realizes. They only see a young man with a fairly new start-up company making waves in the big pond.

What they fail to realize, this little business that’s worth millions after a few years is just a cover for what I really do. They will never know who I truly am and what I’m truly capable of. Unless they cross me, then they will meet Capo DeLuca.

“Mr. DeLuca, do you realize what my colleague is trying to tell you? This vote is worth millions of dollars. And the owners of corporations like yours will be footing the bill.” Another bolder commissioner says. I can see the panic in his splotchy red face. He knows that I’m not buying what they’re trying to sell. These people are pathetic if they think I’m going to waste my money buying votes. There are far more effective ways to get things to go your way.

“I know exactly what he said because you’ve both been saying the same thing for almost the entirety of this meeting.” I keep my voice low and my face purposely blank.

These motherfuckers have tested my patience, and I’m done. They will vote in favor of the least percentage increase because I will break into their houses and torture them to death if they don’t.

“Mr. DeLuca, I don’t think you understand. I…” I hold up my hand to stop the commissioner from spewing any more garbage in my presence. But before I can give him the tongue lashing his ass deserves, I see my executive personal assistant through the glass of the conference room.

My train of thought quickly derails, and my brain freezes. EgyptfuckingKing. The bane of my existence never looks my way as she floats past like a fucking supermodel on a Paris runway.

I wish I would’ve never agreed to give her a job. But when Buddy, her father, and I had a conversation, he told me how she’d graduated at the top of her class and how he needed to do everything he could to keep her from leaving the state for a job. He made it sound like Egypt was his nerdy little girl who needed a helping hand. And since Buddy saved my life, and I owed him, I agreed to give her a reason to stay in Nashville.

I didn’t question when Buddy insisted he wanted to make sure Egypt didn’t know he was involved in getting her the job because she was determined to do things herself. I simply told my office to send her an interview request and offer her the second personal assistant position.

I had my HR department hire her without seeing who she was or what she looked like. That was my first mistake. My second was making her my assistant over my entire life.

Yes, she is great at her job, and I really don’t know what I would do without her, but I don’t know how much longer I can pretend that she doesn’t affect me. My grumpy demeanor isn’t an act, but it doesn’t seem to deter Egypt from her cheerful disposition.

The fact that I trust her when I can count on one hand the people in my life that I trust that isn’t family is astounding. She has proven herself time and time again that she is irreplaceable as my assistant. But it’s more than that. Her intelligence goes beyond her twenty-four years, and although she obviously lacks in life experience, she rolls with every punch I throw at her.

And ever since Egypt sashayed her tight perfect little ass into my office, I have had a never-ending hard-on. I don’t know why Buddy didn’t tell me how beautiful Egypt is. I know she’s his daughter, but I know for fucking sure Buddy can see she’s absolutely gorgeous. How the fuck can he not?

Egypt has beautiful dark brown skin that radiates no matter what she’s wearing. Dark brown intelligent eyes that twinkle when she’s amused and the juiciest pair of pouty lips I have ever seen.

The pencil skirt she’s wearing today hugs her hips and ass so nicely that the sight has my dick throbbing. I want to groan out loud when she runs her hand down her sides and adjusts the fabric as she walks.Damn to be a piece of polyester blend. If I were alone, I would groan out loud and jack off in my bathroom.

But I’m not alone or in the privacy of my office. I’m here trying not to kill the shadiest members of the Tennessee gaming commission.

“Gentlemen, the information was enlightening.” I buzz Daniel because I know he’s in charge since Egypt just left.

“Yes?” Daniel answers quickly.

“Please, come and see our guests out.”

“Yes, Giovanni.”

Daniel arrives at the conference door five seconds later, and although the men want to protest, they’re smart enough to grab their belongings, nod, and leave while they can still walk.

My crew will make sure to pay them a visit tonight, so they understand how our working partnership will go from now on. It’s better they learn the easy way and not at the bottom of the Cumberland River.
