Chapter Eighteen

Todd

The night is clear as we approach the house in Big Bear. Clive kills the engine.

“What’s wrong?” Shannon asks.

We both say, “The gates are open.”

“Maybe they didn’t lock them?” suggest Claude.

Clive shakes his head. “Something's not right.”

It’s then we see muzzle flashes from further up the hill.

“Have you got a gun?” I ask.

Clive grins and gets out of his car. The three of us follow him to the back of the vehicle, where he opens the trunk, removes a fake floor, and reveals handguns, shotguns, and even an Uzi.

“What would you like?”

Shaking my head, I pull out my Glock. “I’m good.”

Clive looks at Shannon. “How about you?”

Shannon holds up her bat, then looks down at all the guns. She grins, tosses the bat into the trunk, and picks up a mini Uzi submachine gun.

“Say hello to my little friend.”

Clive chuckles. “It suits you.”

Shannon gives him a serious look. “It matches my outfit.”

Clive looks her up and down. “Yep, you rock that shit.”

The sound of more gunfire pierces the air.

“If you two are done flirting?”

Clive winks at me. “Not even close.”

Shannon holds the gun as though she was born with it and says, “Come on, let’s go kick some ass!”

She doesn’t wait for us. Shannon charges up the driveway, leaving the three of us staring at her departing figure. Shaking my head at her, I glance at Claude.

“You coming?”

“Honey, I’m a lover, not a fighter.”

“Fair enough. Hide somewhere with a gun.”

Clive runs off in pursuit of Shannon. Claude picks up a handgun and grabs my arm.

“Be careful.”

“I will.”

Claude grabs me and crushes his lips to mine, then holds me at arm’s length and says, “You better.”

Slightly stunned, I stumble away in search of Shannon and Clive.
