Chapter Nineteen

Athena

Kris opens the door, his hand firmly around mine as we run into the night. Fear is a powerful motivator as we head for a group of bushes. Crouching down, I’m breathing hard but trying to be quiet at the same time. Kris is scanning the area, looking for potential threats. It’ll only be a matter of time before they find the passageway out of the house.

Lulu is next to me when another round of bullets is fired, and she takes off around the back of the house.

“Lulu!” I loud whisper, and Kris puts a hand to my mouth.

She’s barking, and in the dark, we can see figures running after her, firing their guns. A man comes close to where we’re hiding, and I’m so scared I can’t move. Kris lets go of my hand.

“Wait here,” he mouths.

I want to tell him to stay, to please, not leave me, but my fear makes it impossible. Kris picks up a rock, rises, and stalks the man. A whimper escapes me, and the man whirls around.

With wide eyes, I watch as Kris hits him in the face with the rock. The man rocks backward as he raises his gun. Kris tackles him, and they roll around on the ground hitting each other. Then the sound of a gunshot pierces the air, and both men lie still.

A scream escapes me as I scramble toward them, no longer caring for my safety. I can hear men shouting and shots being fired, but all I can think of is I need to get to Kris. I’m running toward him as men with guns are running toward me, and then I hear an almighty scream from behind me. Shannon is running toward me as I glance over my shoulder.

“Get down, bestie!”

I immediately drop to the ground as a hail of bullets flies over me, and the men coming toward me all fall like toy soldiers. Shannon reaches me, and I look up at her. She’s dressed in black with an Uzi in her hand.

“Are you okay?”

“Kris.” I point to the bodies ahead of us.

“Down!” yells Todd, and both of us hit the ground.

The sound of gunfire is so loud that I put my hands over my ears and curl into the fetal position, staring at Kris’ body, wishing for him to move. Finally, the gunfire stops, and I scramble to my feet and run to Kris.

The man is on top of him, and I roll him off. Looking down at Kris, his eyes seem to be lifeless as they stare at the night sky.

But then he smiles.

Relief washes over me, and through tears, I say, “Where you go, I follow. Don’t you ever fucking leave me again!”
