She makes eye contact with me through the mirror, waiting for me to reply. So I mutter an “Oh no, it’s fine.”

Even her laugh is flawless—like when a Disney princess sings to little birds. She turns toward me. “I’ve come on too strong, haven’t I?”

I suck in a breath. “No… I’m just confused.”

She tilts her head.

“You and Wade are together, right?” The words burn in my mouth.

Her eyes bulge. “Oh, god, no. He’s my dear friend, but I’ve got my eye on another and, well, let’s just say that is a one-sided thing.”

My nose wrinkles as she reaches out and grabs my hand. “Bernie, I am not standing in your way, girly. I saw the way you looked at him on that dance floor. You need to go with it. It would make my day.”

Her words tumble around in my brain. I’m in shock right now. “Uh. I appreciate your pep talk, but like you, I’m dealing with something very much one-sided.”

Her smile turns sly, and I wonder if she and Ruby could be related. Her elegant shoulder lifts. “Meh. Maybe, maybe not.”

I blink. She winks at me.

“Well, I promised Wade he was dancing with me to all the classic, obnoxious wedding songs, so I gotta get back out there. Feel free to join us.” With that, she wiggles her professionally manicured eyebrows and is gone in a flash.

What the hell just happened?
